Now what?

Post by PhilipR » Tue Aug 02, 2011 10:20 am

I have been on CPAP for 2 months, and I do not feel any better in mornings. I was diagnosed with mild to moderate sleep apnea. Why am I continuing to do this?
Any ideas of what is happening?

I think we would need a little more information. Do you have a machine that gives you information about whether your mask is leaking too much, how many events you are still having, etc.? What do you mean by "I do not feel any better in mornings"?

PhilipR, from our perspective, your question kinda sounds like:

"I had my transmission worked on 2 months ago and my car still doesn't feel right. It was diagnosed with transmission trouble. Why am I continuing to drive it?"

Any ideas what is wrong?"

So, please help us out with some details.
Thinking of quitting CPAP?

No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:

Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

I agree we need a lot more information from you. By now if you are not feeling any better I would hope you have an appointment with your prescribing doctor to go over your data. It takes some of us longer to feel better than others. You are continuing to use your CPAP because you care about your health. It's good you are reaching out for help. Try and answer the questions asked because only with the answers will anyone be able to help you.

Hook it up to your ASV and be sure and seal the mask to the carburetor. If you get leaks use more duck tape. Then drive backwards up hill. Can't wait to here your outcome. Good luck.

About an hour after I wake up, I feel like I could almost pass out. Very tired.....it does not always last all day, sometimes just about an hour. My mask is not leaking. I had second sleep test with mask after the inital diagnosis sleep test, but could not fall asleep, so just went home at 2am. Trying to get rescheduled. My machine is a Philips Restronic set at 8. The mask is confortable, and I sleep all night.

1. We need an exact model name, Phillips Respironics is a manufacturer, "PR System One" or "RemStar M", these are model names.
2. So, in the titration test, you went home early? That is a bit odd. Your hooked up to the machines, even without the mask, you paid for the night. Anyway, the sleep study has to be done without, but the titration can be done with sleep aids. See if the doc will give you an Ambien. I had the same problem in the initial sleep study, so my doc wrote me an Rx for a single Ambien to be used the night of the titration.
3. If the titration wasn't completed, where did the prescription for 8cm H2O come from? Was that just a guess?
4. You say your mask isn't leaking, is this what you see on the screen or what you think based on what you feel?
5. I understand it's frustrating, I'm still in the same boat and I've been at it for 6 months now. Don't give up yet.

The fact that your sleepiness only lasts for an hour is unusual for sleep apnea. The typical behavior is drowsiness throughout the day. This makes me wonder if there isn't something else going on, but first and foremost there is apparently a positive identification for sleep apnea since a titration was ordered. We need to make sure that treatment is working before we jump elsewhere. Like I said, I've been in the same boat. You can ask the people here (or just search my previous posts), I've had mood swings and been pissed off at the world and felt like it was all pointless, but get us some more information and keep going at it as best you can.

There are many things that can cause CPAP not to work well--leaks, mouth breathing when you use a nasal mask, nasal stuffiness, wrong sleep position, wrong machine settings, a condition that CPAP cannot treat, etc. Sounds like you were diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea in that first sleep study, so CPAP will most likely work for you (knock on wood). But, you will probably need to successfully complete that second night, when the techs determine what pressure and machine settings you need, to get a prescription that works. The sleep techs should also be able to tell if you've got problems such as mouth breathing that need to be dealt with for CPAP therapy to be effective.

While you're waiting, see if your sleep doctor, DME person or anyone you've dealt with will talk to you to offer some insight, or about possible things to try to make the therapy work better.

I had more problems than most before I got my CPAP therapy to work half-way well. But, it's worthwhile persevering.
