What does...

Post by ems » Sun Jul 31, 2011 3:29 pm

95 percentile mean? Sleep study clinic sent info re the card in the machine. Usually, 95 percentile means pretty good. Am I reading this correctly??

Thanks.

95th percentile of what?

If it's 95th percentile of pressure, and gives a number, it means you spent 95% of the night at or below that pressure with an autoPAP machine.

For instance, if it says "95% pressure = 12," it means that your pressure was at or below 12 cmH2O for 95% of the night. It isn't comparing your pressure to anyone else.

Sometime, 90% or 95% pressure is used as an estimate of what you should set your minimum pressure to be.

And it also means that your pressure was AT or ABOVE 12 cmH20 for 5% of the night.

And how much is 5% of the night? 5% of one hour is 3 minutes. So continuing with archangle's example: If your machine ran for 7.3 hours overnight and your 95% pressure level is 12cm, that means your pressure was AT or ABOVE 12cm for 7.3*3 = 21.9 minutes during the night.

Same thing with the 95% leak rate on the S9: If you ran the machine for 7.3 hours and the 95% unintentional leak rate is 14.2 L/min, that means your unintentional leak rate was AT or ABOVE 14.2 L/min for 7.3*3-21.9 minutes during the night.
