black tongue?

Post by catbirdgirl » Thu Jul 28, 2011 8:50 pm

my tongue's been irritated all day. I looked in the mirror earlier and it's black! I thought it was something I'd eaten but I brushed it and its not going back to normal color. What could cause this? I had a month of antibiotics recently for a rash....I used bottled spring water in my cpap cause I was on a trip and lazy for a couple of days and didnt get distilled water, I do have reflux and it's been acting up a little.....

help!

Pepto Bismol will do that.

fungus will make you tongue black too..Especially if you were on antibiotics. I would speak with your doctor. Sounds like fungus to me.

Call the doctor who gave you the antibiotics first thing in the morning.

Googling "Black tongue" may give you some info, but call the doctor anyway.

I also vote for fungus. In addition to calling your Dr ASAP, try eating some yogurt and see if changes your tongue at all. I think your Dr will give you some medicine.

Ditto on the yoghurt - and make it the 'live' kind.

Do you take Tums for heartburn? That's caused me to have a black tongue in the morning. Tums also cause rebound reflux, so I learned to avoid them.

Have you been taking Pepto Bismol for your reflux? Bismuth subsalicylate will do that, it's caused if you have a slightly higher sulfur in your saliva (and stool) and it's harmless.

Wew! Thanks, for the pepto comment. That was likely the issue, I did use a pepto pill hours before the black tongue appeared. It resolved with in 24 hours of that.

I started taking acidophilus and eating more yogurt this week. also brushing tongue and bought a scraper. and am trying to get my doc on the phone. I think its either my reflux, the antibiotics, or a fungus- all of which appear likely. My mouth tastes terrible and the symptom's not really going away. I've also been gargling with warm salt water and wild oregano oil which is supposed to be a good natural antifungal/antibiotic.
