Bad night last night - uncommon?

Post by rogerconnelly » Fri Jul 15, 2011 10:05 am

Hello community - I'm only in my third month, but I was starting to think I had things pretty well sorted out - at least as far as my mask fitting without leaks goes (which had been my biggest problem originally). Then last night happened - you would think I had never worn a mask before! I was woken up at least five or six times throughout the night by big leaks under the mask liner - had to take off and refit the mask each time and use the ramp feature on my machine to go back to sleep. Woke up this morning feeling very un-rested like the old days.

Is this uncommon? Do others have "set-backs" like this sometimes? Can I expect better luck tonight, or was last night indicative of some larger problem?

Not whining here - just feeling a little discouraged - hoping for some positive reinforcement if anyone out there has it - thanks

Even people who aren't on xPAP therapy have a bad night here and there. I'd say it's quite normal for all of us to experience one now and then. Don't be discouraged by it unless it becomes a continuing trend, in which case some detective work needs to be done. For now, look forward to sleeping tonight with positive expectations.

Some masks and headgear have a short life span - 3 months. Make sure you are not due for a new mask or need to wash & resize your head gear.

Wow, I envy you. What I think is uncommon is that you're in your 3rd month and haven't had a bad night until now!

I'm only a few weeks into this, and I have about 2 bad nights per week, and I'm sure there are others with more. I'm continually working on this trying to improve it.

I wouldn't worry about it unless it continues. Are you monitoring your progress with software?
Thinking of quitting CPAP?

No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:

I have bad nights all the time. Usually mine are centered around mask leaks.

I must confess to what I did a few weeks back... Don't nobody laugh!!! I thought I turned on my machine, when I acually didn't. I couldn't understand why I had a hard trouble breathing! The little air flapper on my mask was "clangin'" all night, and I would have swapped masks, but I was too dang tired. Finally, I woke myself up by snoring around 1:00 am and decided something wasn't right. I looked at my machine and realized it wasn't on! Once the machine was on, I was ok.

Do I hear someone over there laughing?

It would be intesting to hear from others some of the dumb things they've done.

I still have my night stick....

If you want to find out WHY????? ....what did you do differently that day and evening before going to bed...too much coffee, sugar, booze, did you excercise late in the day? Those are questions you can ask yourself, I know if I eat or drink anything after 8pm......its a lousy night. Otherwise you can just see if its a one night thing and you go back to your normal good nights sleep. The obvious thing to check is your mask as others have said.
Good luck
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

Ha ha, I mean <<cough cough>> <<ahem>>.

That's a good one Sheriff. My dumb moment (of many) came when I was going out somewhere and before leaving I was looking for my sunglasses. My eyes are a bit sensitive to the sun so I never go anywhere without them. So I looked and looked and looked. I don't have a set place to put them, I usually just lay them down on a table or counter somewhere, and therefore it's not unusual for me to be looking for them. But this time I seem to have outdone myself. I checked everywhere, bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, upstairs, downstairs. I went out to the truck and....nope, not there. Back to the house, looking looking looking. Out to the truck again. Nothing.

I finally resigned myself to the fact that I had lost them and now I'd have to buy another set. But by this time I had to use the head, so I went to the bathroom, and afterward I washed my hands when I looked in the mirror: I was wearing them.

Roger, you're doomed. CPAP will never work again for you.

Try to figure out if something changed to cause your problems. Mask, headgear, etc. If it doesn't happen again, no big deal.

By the way, this is yet another reason it's good to have a spare mask, hose, cushions, etc. You can swap them out and see if it makes any difference. Figure out when your insurance will buy new stuff and accumulate at least one spare of each. It's also good to get a spare mask of a different type if the opportunity presents itself.

Took two Ambien, 25 minutes later, ready to go to bed, found myself in a half-dream state, filling my humidifier tank with vodka.

Well, did you empty out the vodka before turning on the machine, or did you spend some time inhaling alcohol fumes? I've always wondered what that would do.

At least that would probably take care of any microorganisms living in the water tank.

We'll have to add it as an option to the "How Do You Clean Your Humidifier?" thread.

I tried to get the vodka back into the vodka bottle, but was too brain fogged to think of using a funnel.

So, I opened an olive jar and made a dirty martini.

Trust me, as Ambien adventures go, that was quite tame.
