Night Monkey, as you are only 24, you should wait a decade to have children and I'm sure orthodontia will be much more developed at that time. In the meantime, just continue to enjoy your youth, as you're doing in your avatar.

Speculation on what causes it is RAMPANT, because it's not life-threatening, and therefore no one has been studying it. The best hypothesis I've heard is that if you engaged in activities growing up that used breath control (swimming, diving, etc.) then you may use Catathrenia as a stress-control tool. I was a competitive air-rifle shooter, and that sport requires strict breath control during the shots, so it makes sense for me.
Who knows why it happens, but apparently CPAP helps with it too (at least during the night)
