i cough every night

Post by chaser3968 » Mon Jan 16, 2006 4:18 pm

Hi, every night when i first use my machine i cough for about 20 minutes. Does anyone have any idea why or should i see my dr. about this. I was just thinking maybe its due to the air flow being to high. I am set on 12. Thank you for any ideas.

I don't know the solution to your problem, but I can relate. I start coughing about 4 a.m. or so every morning. Not sure why, but I'm new to therapy, and I'm still trying to figure the whole thing out!

About two weeks after I started on my CPAP last May, I came down with a horrible cold/cough and had to quit for about 10 days while I got over it. After I started again, I started taking a "sip" of Vicks Nyquil cough syrup each night as part of my bedtime ritual......and still do. It's helped me out through some subsequent colds and flu since then.

Best wishes,

I'm not real excited about having to take any more medication on a regular basis. Nyquil has alcohol in it, also.

I was referring to the Vicks Nyquil COUGH SYRUP.....not the Nyquil "cold medicine"....although that stuff will "knock you out" for the night. I haven't checked the label for alcoholic content.....I was just stating that it seems to work for me......and I only use maybe the equivalent to a teaspoon.

I don't think anyone really answered you question. I do the same thing as you and I did talk to my Dr.

He said it was due to the CPAP (basically) causing post nasal drip by blowing (forcing) the air through your sinuses. He suggested an OTC antihistamine which I tried and it helped. But, I'm like you, I don't like to take anything, so now I just live with it as part of my nightly routine. It helps a little to make sure you blow your nose well before starting treatment.

After my coughing I did go to the Pulmanoligist MD to see about it he told me to use claritan or øver counter equivilant and i have stopped the coughing--one a day pill cheap too compared to named brand. The post nasal has gone away.

the post nasal drip comes from the imflamation of the nasal cavities and they secret fluid to protect them. Since additional medication is out, try using an over the counter saline nasal spray. This should help keep you nasal cavities moist and help prevent some of the swelling. Also, you can stick your head over a sink of hot water and breathe in the steam. A heated humidifier can help to.

Try preheating the water in your humidifier. If I start with cold dry air, I will cough until the HH warms up enough to supply more moisture
