I have a question for neti pot users or whatever type of nasal rinse is used..

Salt water goes in one nostril and out the other.....does any water go into actual sinus cavity, like the maxillary sinuses?

Hi Pugsy,

From the NeilMed video here's the link, http://www.neilmed.com/usa/adword_sr.ph ... 7AodB31yMA it only cleanses nasal passages including the frontal and sphenoid sinuses. No access to maxillary sinuses.

Hope this helps

It does. Thank you. I was just wondering about the maxillary sinuses. So any gunk in maxillary sinuses has to make its way to nasal passage on its own to be washed away. My sister uses the neti pot thing. I cannot bring myself to try it and thankfully I have no real need to.

The saline rinse sachets from NeilMed are buffered somehow- I think they use baking soda, and so those don't burn my nose, so I wonder how much kitchen salt and how much baking soda does one use per 8 ounces in the neti-pot? I am about out of rinse packets and would love to make my own if it would not burn my nasal passageways. They are expensive, and money is really tight, but I will not sacrifice less expense for a burning nose while rinsing it. Thanks for any suggestions.
Hello codinqueen,
sorry for the late reply, have been camping (with my CPAP and nasal rinse ) just returned home and read your question. The 'normal' advise by medical persons is to use ordinary kitchen salt in a special ratio. They advise: 9 grams of kitchen salt in 1 liter of (pre)cooked water. Or they say 1 small teaspoon of kitchen salt in a cup of (pre) cooked water. And yes: You use it luke warm, not boiling hot!

To be honest, I am not bothered much by all the rules.
I use luke warm water straight from the tap (good local water quality) and the nasopure bottle (the bigger one) and about a teaspoon of kitchen salt. You can experiment a little. Check if it's too salty ... or not.

Good luck with your experiments, kitchen salt is cheap

Hi Everyone, Was just re reading everyone posts. I did do the Netipot and it worked great. I met with my Sleep Doc on Tuesday and she mentioned that you can use it every night and that you can use Baking Soda/Salt instead of the packages that come with it. 1 teaspoon of each with 8 oz of warm water.

She was very happy with my progress and my aveage AHI is .03 (I read my downloads every other day) down from 28 per hour from my sleep study. No more visits for a year!!! YAY!!!!

Thanks for everyone's help on this Board!!!!
Today is a new day: Laurie
