Post by loganasu » Thu Jun 23, 2011 5:13 am

Hello
My wife said I had a rough night. (I take ambein so I don't know)
Wife said I was tossing and turning (now I have that song stuck ing my head) all night and did a lot of snoreing.
I wake up and my mask is on the end table.

Just wondering

I guess I should have been clear.
I was asking about snoring while mask is on.

The taking the mask of during sleep is a different issue.

Snoring enough for wife to comment along with a mask which leaves mouth uncovered (as with mask in your profile) could indicate mouth breathing (not good) or less than effective therapy pressure allowing possibly events to occur (also not good)
or a combination of those (also not good).

Do you have software to evaluate leak fully? or AHI?

Yes, I do have the software... just didn't have time this morning to review it.

Snoring while mask is on is definitely a bad thing. Many of us tape our mouths shut(not recommended by some) or we use a chinstrap. Snoring while sleeping indicates your mouth is open, and as long as it is open while you are not wearing a full-face mask, you are not receiving your prescribed pressure, so you are probably still having apneas, hypopneas, and O2 desats. You might need to go to a full-face mask if you can't train yourself or use a chinstrap to keep the mouth closed.

Does this mean that it is okay to still snore as long as you wear a full-face mask?

If you use a full face mask and still snore; You most likely need to up the pressure a bit(I would raise it 1 full point). If the airway is correctly opened by the air pressure, there should be no snoring. Of course before you raise the pressure be sure all leaks are under control.

going just on sounds of snores reported by bed partners, snores could maybe indicate something in therapy is not quite as good as it could be. Remember that snores could still indicate a partial collapse of the airway.

Full face masks are designed to help mouth breathers keep from losing therapy via mouth breathing. Snoring is different from mouth breathing. Not everyone who mouth breathes will snore.

One needs to try to evaluate snoring reported by bed partner. Is it a little or a lot? Does the use of software confirm anything with the snores? Does it seem to be supine sleeping only?

Thanks everyone for the replys.

I haven't been able to download my data yet, so I do not know what it indicates.
Last night I did sleep with my FFM (Full Face Mask) and I feel better today, although I didn't ask my wife if I was snoring last night.

I use a nasal pillow mask, and at times I tape my mouth shut, just to retrain it to STAY shut while I am sleeping. If and when I snore while wearing the mask, or wake up with sore throat, I go back to taping for a few nights, because both of those indicate my mouth is open and my therapy pressure is going out my mouth. Some ppl do not believe in taping, as could be dangerous, but I crimp the end of it so I can grab and rip it off really quick if needed, (just as quick as I could release a chinstrap if I used one of those). It is rare now to snore after doing this, I have been on CPAP since February and am feeling better, & waking with energy now that I am getting more restfull sleep. My hubby is also sleeping better because less snoring now.

I can open my mouth a little even if I have a chinstrap on. I can also open my lips and breathe through them without adjusting the chin strap. I can probably do this even in my sleep.

As for snoring, remember that when you're actually snoring, you're necessarily breathing. It's between snores that you're having an apnea. If you've ever listened to an apneac snoring, it's informative.

Snore..no breathing...no breathing...explosive snort/snore....breathe normally...snore...repeat.

Snoring makes me think that you're just one step above an obstructive apnea. Snoring can irritate your throat without apneas. It may also indicate reduced airflow. If you can adjust your therapy to eliminate snoring, that's a good thing.
