Swallowing Air

Post by filibuster » Wed Jun 22, 2011 3:16 pm

I have been on CPAP for a few years now. Two different Doctors have had me on pressures ranging from 6 to 12. A few months ago I started to complain about my mouth opening up at night causing me to wake. I also complained about farts (moring), burps (all day), and a small clicking noise/feeling in my throat. I was ordered an auto-tritration study and my pressure was dropped from 10 to 6. My mouth no longer opens at night and the fart/burping has declined significantly. My throat clicking remains and is getting worse. The clicks have turned into a gurgling. I hypothesize that this is swallowed air escaping my body. Does anyone else experience anything like this? A clicking or gurgling in the throat and has any doctor confirmed for you that it is swallowed air escaping? I've brought the hypothesis to my sleep medicine doctor but he has no explanation. I went to an ear nose and throat for an esophogeal scope and he says there's a bit of iritation consistent with acid reflux. i was put on a daily medication. He also suggested I see a gastroenterologist to run a scope to my stomach. I've been to the gastro and my scope is schedluled for mid-July. In the mean-time I've just had an ultrasound of my stomach... The technician said nothing of the procedure - only that results would be sent to the doctor.

I'd especially appreciate hearing from anyone who has a daily clicking or gurgling in their throat that they believe or know to be a result of CPAP and/or the swallowing of air. Of course, I'm interested to hear from anyone who has something of value to share.

Thank you for your time and attention.

I actually have daytime apnea, if my airway relaxes, resulting in the symptoms you are reporting. It's more than likely the reflux. I have success with taking small sips of water throughout the day. One other thing, make sure your medicine is the right one for you. I tried 5 different ones, until I got the right one. Asiphex works for me.

Why not use the search box and do a search on aerophagia? There have been many threads about this topic.
