Wireless CPAP Modem Causing Internet to Cut Out?

Post by napstress » Sat Jun 11, 2011 11:34 am

Is it possible that the wireless modem on my CPAP machine is causing our Internet to cut out intermittently? If so, could that happen even if the CPAP machine is disconnected from a power source? When I called Verizon about the Internet cutting out, tech support asked if we have a house alarm. We don't. I didn't think of it at the time, but we did start having connectivity problems around the time I brought the CPAP machine home. We lost Internet connection yesterday but the machine was unplugged from the wall.

Do you have it plugged into their DSL interface as ALL phone jacks in the house should have. You should have gotten plenty for all lines, I think five came with mine. Jim

Trying to get phone help from Verizon is useless, might as well be talking to a bowl of Curry.

I believe you said earlier that your modem doesn't plug into the phone line or the internet. There's no wire coming out from the modem to the phone line or internet, and you don't have a second box that plugs into the phone or internet. If that's true, it won't affect your internet.

If the machine is unplugged, it is even less likely.

I'm assuming your Verizon internet comes into your house on some sort of cable, not an antenna.

Don't tell Verizon about the CPAP, unless they specifically ask you about a CPAP machine. They're just looking for an excuse to blame you and close the service call and make their numbers look good.

Be tough with them. Don't let them close the service call until it's fixed. Keep calling them until it's fixed. At some point, they'll get tired of having to come back and try to actually find the problem.

If it's like the Kindle, it's built into the cost of service. The Kindle cell phone cost is part of the cost of the books when you download them.

Thanks for answering my question, Archangle. I believe our Internet comes in through cable.

Thanks also for the heads up about not telling Verizon about the CPAP machine and also how to handle them. So far, they are testing the computer modem remotely and have not mentioned making a house call.

It's not a kindle. Naptress do you know who pays for the cell service to your modem?

I believe there are commercial services that provide this service to the DMEs. They provide the modem, wireless service, servers, and a web site that monitors the modem to the DME. I presume the service subcontracts wireless access with the existing cell phone network providers. The DME resells the monitoring service and/or bundles it in with their other services.

I got the impression that some of these services are run by the CPAP manufacturers, or by someone with close ties. I think I saw this service listed on one of the CPAP manufacturer's website. There may be some independent companies that do this, or some of the bigger DME groups may run their own. I doubt "Aunt Mary's power tool and respiratory equipment company" handles any of the technical details.

Napstress, do you get a separate bill for the modem and monitoring, or just one bill from the DME and/or doctor?

I'm assuming you mean the modem on my CPAP machine, right? I do not know who pays for the cell service to that modem. I only get one bill from the DME, who supplies the CPAP machine. What are you guys thinking, here? That I should call them to see if their modem can interfere with my Internet connectivity?

No. It's not interfering with your internet. Especially since you said you unplugged the CPAP and still had internet problems.

It's extremely unlikely it would interfere with your internet anyway.

Is your internet still messed up?
