What does mask type mean for System 1 machines

Post by JDS74 » Wed Jun 08, 2011 5:05 pm

I was just looking at Pugsy's charts on a different thread and marveled at the low level the leakage chart showed.
I use a oral mask for F&P and was wondering what the choices of mask type on the S1 machine means interms of reported leakage.

I know they are supposed to tell the software / machine something about the expected leak rate for a particular mask - but what rates do they mean?

Inquiring minds would really like to know.

Resistance setting only. Full face masks will typically have more "resistance" than say nasal pillows mask.

Does not affect leak reporting at all.

Please note that most of my reports I have set Encore Pro to show Unintentional leak. These leak reports don't look the same as Encore Viewer reports which are Total Leak. So don't go thinking that your nice straight line at 30 L/min is a whole lot worse than mine. Visually I like the baseline where it is. Just my preference and I have the ability to change it easily in the software.

My machine is set with Resistance setting 0 or off I guess it is. I have played with the Resistance settings. Leak reporting is unchanged.

Resistance setting supposedly helpful in making it easier to get the seal back if the machine senses a large leak. At least that is what website implies.

Personally I think a lot of hooplah about not much of anything. But that is just me.

Here's the acceptable leak rate for your mask, according to F&P (leak rate is next to the pressure)
pressure leak
4 19
5 22
6 24.5
7 27
8 29.5
9 32
10 34
11 36
12 38
13 40
14 41.5
15 43
16 44.5
17 46
18 48
19 50
20 51.5
So if the leak rate shown on your machine should be at or close to the acceptable leak on this chart.

Bons:

Thank you so much. My IPAP is about 14 cm H2O and my reports show a leak rate of 36.

So according to the chart, I'm doing really well.

Pressure Leak
11 36
12 38
13 40
14 41.5

How do you set that parameter?

Default setting in Encore Pro 2.4 is unintentional leak.
Changing to total leak is done by editing the company settings preference tab. Choice is simple Total Leak or Unintentional leak

Don't ask how the software "knows" what mask to base its numbers on. We don't know for sure what they use.
My baseline seems to start at zero for unintentional numbers. I have a friend who uses Quattro FX at 16 cm and her unintentional leak reports start around 10 to 15 L/min baseline, definitely not at zero.
