Determination and time is a great part of success. I too learned to sleep on my back and that really helped with the leakage. When I get frustrated, I remind myself of the AHI numbers without my mask. My numbers aren't where I'd like them to be yet, but they're much better than with no mask. Hang in there. People here have some great success stories and advice. Although some here have full masks, I've found more success with a nasal mask and a chin strap. After trying, and buying, different masks through my DME, I found out that the sleep clinic had a lab and a technician that could have let me try some different ones on. No one told me about that and I was too much of a novice to know to ask. Hang in there. It's worth it.

A few words of encouragement:

1. You defiitely need a point of contact, someone who can answer your questions, and help you make
the adjustments we all have to make. Be willing to travel to see a sleep doctor who is respected who
can work through this.

2. DONT stop the therapy. We're dealing with major issues of our health. Dont risk making your health worse.

3. Everything in life, before it becomes a habit, is hard. Its trial and error, mistakes, and two steps forward
and one back.

Thanks everyone for your kind words and support.

I have added my machine and mask info to my profile.

My first mask was a Mirage Quattro. I am now using the Quattro FX.

I can't use a sinus mask, I have have chronic sinus problems and polyps.

Thanks,
John

ok... you have a good machine, and that's a good thing.

I'm guessing that you don't have the software... but somebody will be along to help with that.

You should also get the clinician's manual (that'll come with the software).

Need to determine what your leak rate is. It may change with the new mask.

John, I also wanted to quit. I was so tired and frustrated after a week and couldn't see how this was going to work. I couldn't lie down with out my heart thumping away. After sending two hours on the phone with someone from here is was willing to help me I now can see my reports. I did get new mask and I have had two really good nights for me in a row. I can't wait till I can go to bed to night and sleep without having an alarm go off for work. I know it's not much but I'm ready to continue and if I need help this is where I will come.

Do not give up, keep posting here and someone will help you. I have no doubt.

Best of luck!!!!!

Laurie

I know how you feel it has have frustrating for me when started nearly 6 months ago and am still at times find it cumbersome but keep hanging on as the thought of sleeping without the machine scare me so keep calm and work out solutions to your problems and it will get better as every body saying .
you have a very good machine ,it will take a while to learn all the functions of the machine and to help with that you might find the links to sleepnationtv and to uncle bob clinical manual useful ......Good Luck . http://vimeo.com/18804483

Hi everyone. Has been a while since I dropped in. Ahh beginning mask troubles. I would say there are only a lucky few that are all set right out of the box. I went from an activa nasal to a full face quattro. I struggled with mask problems from day one. I loved my first mask. If I did not have so many sinus issues i would still be using it. The quattro is a bear to get seated and not have it leave a nasty bruise on your nose. The bottom line is that everyone here is so helpful I was able to get the mask to work. It took a huge amount of trial and error as well as perserverance. If you follow the excellent suggestions you will get from everyone here you will get it figured out. Getting the right mask with whatever accessories you need is the hardest part. Getting used to the hoses and sleeping with the gear is secondary to mask comfort and stabilizing the leaks.

Hang in there you will beat this and get past it.

There is satisfaction in victory not to mention rested sleep.

I could never get the quattro to work with my face: always leaks. I went to a activa lt.

You may have the wrong mask.

John,

Don't give up. I have found the people on this forum are really helpful.

I use a Quattro FX and it is very comfortable. I found that the small which is supposed to fit me better, pinched the sides of my nose so I use a medium.

You do need to start a little early to see how everything is working and get things adjusted. Sometimes it is tough when you first try a mask because you pull this strap of that one. One of the things I did was push the mask back toward my face with my index finger to see where it seals up the best. Once you feel that you can get a good seal and it is comfortable you can adjust the straps to keep it there.
