Yes the nose is a useful apparatus. It does filter out the impurities and regulates the air pressure delivered to it, along with a host of other handy things. I can't believe that some would think that you could be successful with a nasal or pillows mask if you can't breath thru your nose.
IMO - that is the first thing any (worthwhile) sleep doc or tech should ask is for you to demonstrate breathing thru your nose, before choosing a mask.
Also, Count how many times you find yourself mouth breathing during the day tomorrow. Then watch for others, you can tell who has troubles breathing.
