More entertainment - comparing insides of 3 remstars
All the advice I got from my sleep clinic folk was that they won't be interested in any on my exploratory pursuits. It seems they are very interested to help people adjust to their masks.
The one time I called to ask for prices on the data card reader etc: they asked what model I had, I said Escape - they said that is a foreign model & they can't really help !!!.
So it seems I won't get much advice from them unless I bump into one of their designers or engineers in a pub one day (fat chance as I don't go to pubs here & suspect neither do they )
Cheers

Re: More entertainment - comparing insides of 3 remstars
FTR, the REMstar Auto breadloaf machine has:
- a pressure sensor
- a flow sensor (two hoses, one off each side of an orifice that creates a pressure differential to push a bit of air through the sensor)
The flow sensor manufacturer says liquid will damage the sensor. That must have cost Respironics dearly in warranty claims.
Later models of humidifier reservoir have a check valve at the inlet to the reservoir. (That may be called “flapper valve”, there’s a grill in the top of the chamber.)
Still, good practice is to not move the machine with water in the reservoir.
(And don’t overfill the reservoir.)

Why would someone whine about me adding information to an old post that people may find when searching for information?

Who's whining? I just pointed it out in case you hadn't noticed. By the way...not too many people search for information on 9 year old machines.BigNortherner wrote:Why would someone whine about me adding information to an old post that people may find when searching for information?

What is the point in opening up a machine that old?
The warranty is long gone!
Voiding the warranty is half the fun!

philosophically, if you can open it up, and put it back together without any indication that you've done so...chunkyfrog wrote:What is the point in opening up a machine that old?

have you voided the warranty?

Huh?
If you void the warranty then ethically it is your cost.
Sounds like people are curious, whereas people who want to learn the machine's secrets to help their own design effort will dissect one, never expose themselves by claiming warranty, beyond repair anyway.
(BTW, glancing at photos of the inside of a System One machine, it looks like they've folded some of the large tubing while using the same motor-housing design. So some additional flow restriction but not major.)

No one uses (or sells) machines that old now, so what would be the point apart from personal curiosity?

Oh, yes, CL is full of them. Even some dealers will foist off an old machine as new, and have done so.
"Makers" are dedicated to having fun finding out how things work,
making them do things that were never intended, and playing with electricity and fire.

Ahem........ I have to take issue with that remark.Julie wrote:No one uses (or sells) machines that old now, so what would be the point apart from personal curiosity?
And, regarding the second part, I took a "never used" Pro 2 apart in 2010 to fix it.......replaced the outlet port (broken hose nipple) and battery (deader than a hammer). Replacing the battery also required having the special cable and software to set the time, which I had already acquired earlier that year.
But, if you remember, "dsm" was like that. Had lots of pictures of the insides of old machines posted on his website.

Re: More entertainment - comparing insides of 3 remstars
I'm still using a classic RemStar Auto breadloaf, it is adequate for my budget.
I get amused at people selling well-used ones, trying to get a price that overlooks:
- what they paid the provider included setup and coaching, that at least doubles price
- a used machine with expired warranty
- cleanliness (I opened and cleaned each spare I've bought)
Yes, spare plural, one for travelling, good thing as my original one quit - dead.
I have repaired two of my machines as well, my body my choice.

I actually have pix of the insides of my machine (Tank) I took off the net somewhere long ago... but I can't imagine what I was thinking - far more likely to make a mess than fix it!

Yeah, I saved the pictures of the Legacy Auto from the website "dsm" had back then and then some for a M Series machine from some source.Julie wrote:I actually have pix of the insides of my machine (Tank) I took off the net somewhere long ago... but I can't imagine what I was thinking - far more likely to make a mess than fix it!
There's really not that much to the insides of them. Most of the circuitry is on the "PCA" board (motherboard), a few hoses, connecting wires and the blower itself.
The one that had the dead battery.......I replaced the original soldered-in battery with a wafer battery holder from an old computer motherboard (the "pins" of the battery holder line up perfectly with the solder holes), so now I can just slip in a new battery at some point if/when the replacement wears out.
