Encore Pro install reboot loop question

Post by Pugsy » Tue Apr 26, 2011 8:39 pm

Okay, I know this has happened before and I haven't found a solution and still sorting through threads.

2 People today have tried to install Encore Pro 2.xxx
One with Windows 7 64 bit version and one with Windows XP 32 bit version. Both get to the English selection and then prompted for the endless reboot loop and failed installs.

What has been the solution to this problem? I haven't experienced it so nothing to draw upon myself.

Person with the XP did attempt to uninstall old Encore Pro 1.8 version which was not complete as she got some message that something couldn't be removed. I don't know if that matters or not.

Windows 7 person didn't have any version of the software that I am aware of.

I know that Onkor online is doable now but bugs me when installs fail. I have nothing more in my bag of computer tricks to offer.

Had a similar problem got this very useful tip from 8hours below:

"This is sometimes a bug with installshield. Something on your computer never completely finished installing and is causing Installshield to think the computer needs a reboot to complete this earlier install. Normally this is a windows update that didn't install correctly. I had some mobile phone software I couldn't install due to this.

If you run windows update or microsoft update usually just installing one new patch will cleanup the previous information and clear the error with installshield. If this doesn't work try the "Why Reboot" utility which should tell you what settings are waiting to be applied at reboot. You may then be able to uninstall the offending patch or remove the rogue settings from the windows registry if you know how.

See if that helps you find the problem.

Try logging in as adminstrator after rebooting.

Thank you, I had found the Whyreboot post but originally my attempt to open the link failed and I wondered if it was a dead link but it now works.

I will point both members to this post to get ideas to try.

So if anyone has additional ideas please share.

Don't remember if the XP user has the "run as administrator" choice or if she just needs to have administrator privilieges.

I had a real hard time trying to install EncorePro on my Windows Vista 32 bit. I never did accomplish an install, but recently became aware of a problem with my Installshield getting updates. The program requests to update, but for some reason it will not. I suspect that if i can figure out how to make it update, I could probably install on Vista.

I did however install the EncorePro on my WindowsXP 32 bit without any problems, EXCEPT... after about a week, an error message came up before I could login to the program that said "Could not check the data base version". I attempted to login several times, until finally I uninstalled EncorePro, and reinstalled, but had to rename SQL that second time.

Curiously, the same error message came up again this morning when I opened the program, but on my third attempt, the error message was gone and I was able to login!!! wth???? must be some sort of glitch, I guess...

I don't think XP has "run as administrator" as an option.

Let me be clear though. "Run as administrator" is different from "logon as administrator."

You may have to LOG IN after roboot as an administrator on Vista (or maybe on Win7) to finish the install on some software. There may be a "RunOnce" entry in the startup registry that won't succeed if you don't log in after a reboot as an administrator.

By the way, it's a BAD!!!! idea to do your normal work on a Vista or Win7 machine with an ID with administrator privileges. This is like driving without a seat belt while sitting on the front bumper of the car with the gasoline sitting in a bucket on the passenger seat while smoking a cigarette. Unfortunately, on Windows XP, you almost don't have a choice because so many things won't work if you aren't an administrator.

I think there are also some limited cases where you have to be "Administrator", not simply a user ID with administrator privileges. On many Vista machines, there is a hidden account named "Administrator," even if you haven't enabled it. There's some registry trick or something that I'd have to Google to figure out how to enable it. This is pretty rare, and I wouldn't worry about enabling the "real" administrator account until I got really desperate.

Encore Pro install reboot loop question - Even uglier option

Post by archangle » Wed Apr 27, 2011 1:15 pm

This is a long ugly chain of events, but it might work if you're brave enough to try it. In theory, it might work. This relates to some problems with Microsoft SQL server, Microsoft .NET framework, Windows Update, and Encore Pro.

In theory, re-installing Microsoft .NET Framework 4 will do no harm. It appears that you may need to reinstall it, even if you already installed it. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... 517b4bdfea

If you want to be safe, reboot and create a System Restore point before proceeding. If it doesn't work, check to see if you broke anything else and undo if necessary.

Try some combination of uninstalling Encore Pro, installing .NET Framework 4, windows update, encore pro install, reboot and LOG IN as an administrator ID.

Also remember that the MS SQL server install will sometimes sit for 10-20 minutes apparently not doing anything at all and then mysteriously complete itself. If you want to monitor it, run the task manager, show processes from all users, and watch for install processes running. Unfortunately, it's hard to tell which processes are involved in installing MS SQL server. Some of them say something about SQL, some of them say "msiexec", and there's some other process named something like "at100" that are involved in SQL install.

Ain't this fun? I hope you have untreated sleep apnea, Bill Gates.

Lol.

Ok, please pardon my ignorance here, but is MS SQL a separate install from MS.net 4.0? Or is this part of the Encore install? I installed .net 4.0 last night for the first time, but am totally willing to do it again if necessary.

Encore Pro will attempt to install MS SQL server if necessary.

I'm not entirely sure what the relationship is between SQL and .NET Framework, just that there seemed to be some sort of interaction when I installed the latest Vista updates.

Satisfaction guaranteed or NO money back.

Well, I could tell you I'm sure it will work, but I usually only lie when I'm getting paid for it.

Finally broke out of the Loop. Why Reboot showed me there was an AVG uninstall fragment in the registry, so I re-installed and uninstalled AVG. Encore Pro software is now installing. Thanks for the help everyone!

Thank you for sharing John.
Now I will point the other person to this thread. Something for her to try.
I will also try to remember this and bookmark this thread. I guess I jinxed you by saying you shouldn't have any problem. Question for you, is the Whyreboot thing easy to do and follow?

One other person has some issues but they are user related to unsure if I can help him. One of those things I could resolve I am sure if I was sitting in front of his computer but he is too far away for house call and I don't do the remote thingy. Don't want that responsibility.
