Cut fluids in PM?

Post by Paul Van Dyk » Fri Apr 22, 2011 12:56 am

A wake up is a wake up right? Usually I wake up once and many times twice during the night to go to the bathroom. Should I cut liquids for now and see if this helps my early recovery? Kind of a drastic thing to do but sometimes I feel desperate...

I cut down my intake of coffee...and I LOVE my coffee....and it has helped to reduce my night time awakenings....as for fluids per se? I drink when I'm thirsty regardless of the hour. Last night I brewed up a 'guilty' half pot of coffee and had the worst night in over a week...so...back to my abstinence program... : > (

Since I have always had to make nightly bathroom trips I have tried cutting back and didn't see much of a difference personally. I have been advised by drs. not to drink much in the evening to help prevent the nightly trips, but as I said didn't see much improvement.

Why not try it for a couple of nights and see what your own experience is? If it helps, then you are on to something, if it doesn't help then don't worry about it.

I know often times once your therapy is going great many have reported that the nightly trips are either eliminated or cut back. Not so in my case, but then my bladder has nerve damage that surgery can't fix.

I find when I cut fluids at all that I just end up in the bathroom trying to pee but the whole system hurts from bladder on down. It might be worth having a try, but you might find it has unpleasant side effects.

One thing to remember is that once you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Something that I've heard from multiple sources is to try drinking fluids that are bound with some other food item. Either herbal tea, fruit juice, broth, etc. That fluid is more likely to stay in your body and moisturize you than just plain water. And anything with caffeine is going to be a diuretic. So avoid things in PM like coffee, tea, even chocolate. I think those things might work better than cutting fluids entirely.

Prior to finding out that I had sleep apnea I would visit the little room 4 to 6 times a night. Each time was full bladder. The Doctor said that it is Nocturia one of the signs of sleep apnea. Now that I have been on the hose for over 4 months it's usually i time a night.
If I have a less than sleepy night it can go up to 2 to 3 times.

Prior to cpap I always had multiple trips to bathroom with full bladder during the night. No matter how much fluid intake I stopped in the evening.
These stopped immediately (first real sign that therapy was working for me) once I got my therapy optimized.

I still limit caffeine in the evenings but mainly because it keeps me wide awake.

If you have no other issues that might require multiple trips to the bathroom, then perhaps therapy is not quite as good as it should be. When you get the report screen shots thing mastered we can have a better idea if that is a potential reason for the still frequent trips to pee.

Yes.

Paul, it sounds like your therapy is not optimized and you are having events that cause the need to urinate. This is very common until the therapy is optimized.

Keep drinking sufficient fluids and get to work with the software and analysis of your therapy. Getting rid of caffeine consumption entirely is also recommended.

But let's not forget that there could be other reasons. Frequent night-time urination, especially if it's strained at all, can indicate prostate swelling. Could be benign, or could be serious stuff. Make sure to mention it to your doc if you're getting up to go a lot, but not really going a lot =)

Best post in the thread. Paul, you need to see your doctor, unless you know there are problems with your therapy. I would probably see the doctor, anyway, while working on the therapy, just in case.
