Canadians buying from CPAP.com

Post by Hawthorne » Wed Dec 28, 2005 6:59 am

Have any Canadians on this site ordered anything from CPAP.com and how was your experience? I am thinking of ordering a couple of things that I haven't found in Canada yet. They are just small accessories. Did you pay duty, etc? Thanks.

In response to Hawthorne, I believe that in order to qualify for the OHIP (Ontario Hospital Insurance Plan) funding of up to $780.00 the supplier has to be on the preferred list with OHIP. This means that certain conditions must be met. One example is that the xPAP unit you get must be warranted for 3 years. Most xPAP manufacturers give a 1 to 2 year warranty leaving the remaining warrant up to the supplier. If the supplier isn't willing to meet this condition in writing they will not be on the preferred list. Here is a link to some typical questions OHIP and the Assistive Devices Program receive. You can get a toll free number from the site and contact them directly about what they will cover. Prices up here in Ontario let alone Canada are ridiculous in regards to xPAP equipment and the DME's (durable medical equipment suppliers) will always push the cheapest stuff first because they make the most profit from it. In regards to items not needing a prescription you are pretty much free to order from where ever but you may end up paying duty.

The $780. that Darth Vader Look is referring to is not from OHIP, it is from Ontario's Assistive Devices Program. This assistance is available to any Ontario citizen once per 5 years and can be accessed by any medical equipment supplier. OHIP provides nothing toward devices.

There is a list of 'preferred' suppliers that can be obtained from the folks at ADP. Darth's comments about suppliers wanting to give you the cheapest equipment is bang on. By selecting a 'preferred' supplier, you can push for the device that you want and still have it's price capped as per ADP guidelines. So, do your homework regarding devices, etc., BEFORE you get to the supplier. Be aware that the price cap (as per ADP) is the same for vanilla CPAP as it is for APAP; the suppliers do not like this as APAP costs them more = lower profits.

I have ordered devices and masks from the US, where the prices are significantly lower than in Canada. I have not paid a cent in duties as medical devices are duty-free when crossing into Canada. I have, however, paid a ridiculous shipping fee when I ordered from CPAP.COM; I won't make this mistake again as I have found other suppliers in the US that don't charge shipping to Canada and will meet CPAP.COM's great low prices on products.

Buy a new hat, drink a good wine, treat yourself, and someone you love, to a new bauble, live while you are alive... you never know when the mid-town bus is going to have your name written across its front bumper!

Will thanks for the input and thanks to CPAP.COM for printing your comments (at least until they read them.)

It sounds like CPAP.COM has a problem they need to address if Canadians are getting hosed on the CPAP shipping.

My company ships packages to Canada from FL all the time and it barely costs more than shipping to CA. I can't speak on the subject of import fees, duties, VAT, and other possible fees which can get expensive.

Johnny, Canada is an entire country north of Houston with millions of people and many thousands of potential customers. Better find a solution for your shipping costs (assuming what Will is saying is correct.)

If it is not correct, you should let your potential customers know.

Nothing is more annoying than shopping around for something online and when you think you've found a good deal, you get hosed at the checkout counter on the shipping. That's how some companies make their money.
