marks on face from mask???

Post by lori » Tue Dec 28, 2004 4:36 pm

I wake up each morning with marks on my face from the mask. The suction seems to be so great that it creates red mark across my nose that don't go away for 1/2 the day. Does anyone else experience this?

This is very common. You may be able to avoid this by using a loose fitting mask like the ResMed Mirage Activa or one of the nasal pillow interfaces like the Breeze or the Swift.

I rationalize it this way...marks on face vs. not getting a good night's sleep... weight the alternatives...

A few red marks are nothing to me if it means feeling better.

Marks on the face part2

Post by Snuffle-nose » Wed Dec 29, 2004 5:27 am

Hello people

Yes I remember I used to get Red marks on my forehead from my nasal masks. I normally call this a " Indian or Hindu" mark what ever which one you pefer.

Please Note: For those who are relgious or Indian or Hindu I ask please excuse the phase[s] I use for the the red mark I get on my forehead. Because of the red mark I got from my Profile Lite mask

Honestly, It does seem to make ME look like honorery member of Indian or Hindu tribe!!!!

I soon found out I had my head strap on too tight so I loosen the head straps on my head peice of my mask and I do not do get this mark on my forehead anymore.
Been on CPAP for a while.....I had moderate apenoa

A gas station

A conveinence store OR

A motel

Sorry , I couldn't resist

Lori, that mark on your nose isn't from suction, but from the pressure of the mask pressing on your skin for extended time preiods. As others here have suggested, loosening your mask straps will help (as long as no air leaks result from them being too lose). I find that whenever I get a mark on the top of the nose that some gentle massaging of that area while I'm in the hot shower helps it disappear by the time I reach work each morning.

I agree with WindFlyer that the marks are from pressure, not suction.

I also agree with Wader that a nasal pillows interface like the Breeze or the Swift can eliminate having a red mark across the bridge of the nose. Swift can leave a Nike swoosh imprint on side of face, but no red mark on nose.

The only time I ever had red pressure marks in the mornings were back when I was used two of the more common Respironics masks - the gel mask and then a Profile Lite mask.

Now I use the wonderfully more comfortable Breeze and the Activa - no marks.

Lori,

You can also use a piece of microcore tape made by 3M to place against your face. I stick the piece back on my mirror and reuse it the next night.

Face Marks

Top straps are toooo tight. The bridge of the nose only has some skin on top of the bone. Better to have the mask alittle snugger on the top lip. The Activa is designed for a great fit but problems can occur when sleeping on your side due to the way the mask rides away from the face.

Side sleepers- the best mask for you is the Visata. Great side support panels and never a mark on the nose.

Good Luck.
