My primary doctor just so happens to be the Director of our hospital's sleep center, so he made the preliminary diagnosis and sent me to the hospital for an overnight test. When I woke up in the morning, the nurse/tech working the machines had me come in the control room and look at my sleep patterns. Then they gave me a copy of the report and sent me on my way.

I was fairly certain I had OSA prior to my sleep study based on the night sweats, waking up with my heart pounding etc and other common symptons, as well as a basic familiarity with the condition, but it was actually the Respiratory Tech at the sleep center who told me I had OSA. With a AHI of 81, he was pretty quick to slap a mask on me.

The morning after the study he spent a good deal of time on the educational portion of the diagnosis- making sure I understood the value of compliance, the pitfalls of non-treatment and the severity of my OSA and what it meant to my overall health. I spent more time with that RT that one morning than I did in total with the sleep doc himself over the course of the next 3 years.

I've since fired that doc, and moved on to one who is willing and even eager to discuss treatment options, answer questions and listen to concerns.
