My unit shut itself off

Post by dusty0318 » Sat Apr 02, 2011 1:41 am

I just woke up and my unit was off. What's up with that?? We didn't have any power outage, my digital clock isn't blinking. What do y'all think?? I have a call in to my DME and the RT is supposed to call me back. This scares me.

You are so used to pulling your mask off that you problibly turned the machine off while partially asleep and don't realize it.

We're here to help, or at least re-assure. I agree with LSAT that your machine probably powered itself off if you pulled your mask off or the hose came off the mask. Masks are equipped with anti-asphyxia valves, so there is no harm done by wearing the mask without power. A lot of very smart people went through a lot of trouble to make sure we sleep okay under lots of odd circumstances. Hopefully soon, your body will become accustomed to using the equipment. They key is to get your subconscious mind to recognize that wearing the mask is helping you. It will be okay. You'll get there.

I don't believe I shut it off. I sleep on the couch and the machine is on the end table and I would have had to do some major body contortions to reach the off button. Mask was behaving itself when I went to bed.

I even took a nap with my mask on this afternoon and the machine worked fine. RT was at a loss as to what happened.

Some machines automatically shut off after a certain number of minutes if the hose comes away from the mask or if the mask comes off the face. Is it possible either of these situations happened, and that your machine is set to auto-off when no pressure resistance is detected? Alternatively, you could have had a brownout -- enough to turn off the cpap machine, but not enough to reset your clock.

I know this is gonna sound weird.. but hey I'm gonna say it anyway. While lying there waiting on sleep last night I was playing around with my breathing.... trying to exhale on the highest pressure and inhale on the lowest pressure... maybe I scared the machine off.

My guess is.......along the lines of what DreamDiver suggested.
Many machines have a setting that will shut down the machine on a large extended mask leak. It thinks you've taken your mask off (mask leak alert) and then shuts down the machine.
These settings can be turned On or Off. I've always had mine turned Off.....in case I have a large leak. I want my machine to keep blowing air so I can breathe.

I might be wrong but a long time ago I seem to remember reading about a couple people having this problem. The problem was with their CPAP, I believe it was a Respironics Classic or tank, this was back at a time when they were the current model. If it's the machine it probably will not be an isolated case.

Hopefully it was something like a mask leak and won't happen again.

I've noticed my REMstar Auto M will automagically turn itself on if you're wearing the mask and breathe in and out a few times.

Very nice feature in my opinion.

Here's a scenario. You had a very extended large leak with the mask on, along the lines of what Den suggested. When you woke back up, the mask was still on, so you didn't notice the large leak. Maybe your mask was too loose? Maybe you leaked through your mouth? Was your mouth really dry after it happened?

Mask is so tight it almost hurts. Only way to keep from leaking. Couldn't have been my mouth because the mask was over it, but it was really dry.

I'm almost ready to say the cat did it. She's stepped on my computer on/off button before, so maybe she got up on the end table to check out the noise and decided to step on it.

When in doubt, the most logical conclusion is the simplest. Pro'lly the cat.

When I have no clue what has caused an issue for me, whatever the situation, I blame stuff on sun spots.
