turn off EPR?

Post by TalonNYC » Tue Mar 29, 2011 3:38 pm

I've got a ResMed S9, and I'm not particularly thrilled with the EPR settings. I'm finding that while drifting off to sleep, I "notice" the pressure differences and it's quite annoying.

I'm told there is a magical tome that can be used to invoke the settings of such a device, but have no clue which wizard to talk to about learning this arcane knowledge.

See if this gets you there.

Also in Uncle_Bob signature is the link to download clinician manual which probably is the tome you were referring to.

EPR is a useless feature that should be removed from Resmed's machines. I never used mine and have found that it decreases my therapy the handful of times Ive tried it. I recommend disabling it completely and going with full pressure.

Did you try the (regular) setup button?
EPR is considered a patient comfort feature -- patient controllable, although some DME will lock you out of it.

Hi folks:

Sorry I didn't report back, but yes I found out how to do it.

Yes, the DME locked out that setting.

Holding the dial/button and the settings button for 3 seconds unlocks the advanced menus. I was able to turn it off there.

You have now definitely crossed over to the dark side. Welcome.

TalonNYC, good for you. I love it when we figure how to unlock "their" secret stuff. EPR should not be locked out anyway.

I have not stayed on it more than a minute or so, so I do not have data of the effects or anything, but the C-flex (Respironics' equivalent of EPR) on my machines makes it feel like I'm not getting the right/usual amount of that back-pressure/resistance that I have come to love so much. Granted, I started off with a machine that had no expiratory pressure relief and got used to the full dose 100% of the time, and I only use a setting of 11, but the stuff isn't for me. In my opinion, that is the main thing I get from my therapy - the maintenance of an open airway when I exhale (the most likely time that the airway can passively collapse). JMHO

Sleep well

ycartf, I agree with you, the thought that the airway is most likely to collapse during exhalation makes sense to me. That's why I prefer my plain old CPAP to my BiPAP or AUTO.

I've been using EPR=3 since I got my S9 Auto in Nov - it's worked great for me. But everyone's different.

Thanks for that description, it' s very helpful to me in understanding these features in relation to airway resistance. My husband had a hard time with cflex and we turned it Off but it's good for me to know some of the reasons people do better without it. Whoever thought breathing could be so complicated!

Maybe they could incorporate some sort of voice changing circuit into the mask to give you a deep voice.

One little problem I get with CFLEX is that as I go from inhale to exhale, the pressure change "pumps" the mask back and forth on my face and it feels strange. I wonder if this effect might cause problems with mask fit and mask tolerance.
