broken cpap?

Post by supernovaburn » Sun Mar 27, 2011 2:11 pm

Well it was a bad night. My cell got a txt from spamers, and thinking it was something important I knocked my cpap onto the floor (a whole 18") running trying to answer it.
So I pick it up, dry it off/out, and now it will not change pressure at any point. I have a resmed autoset II in a-pap mode. It now just sits at the min pressure all night, and does not drop pressure even on exhale. This makes it almost useless. It's like I am back to my original cpap without c-flex even. Sigh....
I tried setting the unit back to factory defaults using the menu with no change. I opened the unit, and reseated all the connections, and cleaned up the couple of drops of water I found in it. No change.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this before, or have any suggestions on how to fix it (or know of a place that repairs them for a reasonable fee).
It is only about 200 hours old. I am now between jobs (and insurance), and don't have a the huge chunk of change needed to buy another one.
Thanks for any advise.

Hi,

Take it back to your DME and tell them what happened. if it only has 200 hour on it then it should still be under warranty. Good Luck!

Cheers

Although that may not cover water damage. Still, check it out. If your DME is reluctant, try Resmed direct. I've found Resmed to be particularly good with fixing their machines, at least in Australia.

200 hours use, but out of warranty. If it was that simple I would have taken it in. Any other suggestions or thoughts?
Thanks.

Have your DME check with their ResMed sales rep. If they give Resmed a fair amount of their business, they may do the
DME a favor and not charge you. Good luck.

Some insurance's will cover the repairs even though it was users fault.

Have you tried setting it to CPAP mode with a specific higher pressure.......like 10 or 12.......to see if it puts our more air?

It is putting out the correct pressure (or as close as I can tell) to what is says it is, but it is not allowing the pressure to change in any mode. It should be able to do the a-flex or c-flex, and I am just getting solid pressure at all times.

Noooooooo........ResMed machines don't have C-Flex or A-Flex. That's a Respironics technology.
ResMed machines (like the Autoset II) would have "EPR".

If it's putting out straight pressure, at least you've got a workable machine.

When you get it fixed or figured out, try putting some old mouse pads under it the next time so it won't get dragged off of whatever you had it on.

I have a different machine (a respironics cpap) but it had similar problems after a similar accident caused water to get inside it. No cflex, no auto on, no logging usage hours in addition to blower hours. All this was caused by water in the sensor that detected the pressure change of my breathing or of the mask being on. I'd guess this is what happened to yours too. If it can't tell whether you're breathing or not cflex won't work nor will it raise pressure. I ended up replacing mine.

Wow, broke after only 200 hours? Sounds like it should be replaced free. Mine lasted for years and I did great on it, when it finally went on me none of the new machines seem to work well for me, different algorithms, watered down IMO. I hate EPR/A-Flex, I like straight pressure.

Maybe consider selling something you value to pay for a new machine.

Eric

Also, if you use a hose management system of any sort, you will only pull on the hose--not the machine. This can help keep your machine safe.
