water pillow!

Post by wolewyck » Thu Mar 17, 2011 9:00 pm

I thought I'd share this discovery with the group. Apparently, there are water pillows, e.g. see: http://tinyurl.com/4zypztd

My dad (formerly a memory foam afficionado) got one first and has been loving it. I tried one last night and also liked it... one seeming advantage is that as you turn on your side, it compresses a little more and so is less likely to result in mask misalignment/leaking. Different amounts of water result in different levels of firmness.

Anyway, one more option for the arsenal...

I read some reviews on those pillows this past weekend. It's tempting, but I hate buying pillows I can's try out.
How heavy are they.. I know it depends on how much water you have in them, just a guesstimate?

Oh yeah!!!! Another pillow I'll want to try. I already own a Pappillow that I layed on for 5 minutes or less, two sizes of buckwheat pillows that lay around my bed, in addition to the Temperpedic neck pillow that I started with, and still use--despite trying every wonderful new thing on the market that I read about here..... Thank you for enabling me.

if it's anything like a chiroflow... it's like a normal pillow weight without the water. The more water you put in it, the harder it gets and the heavier it gets.

I know what you mean Scrapper. I'm using a contour pillow and 2 small travel pillows to make adjustments. It's working really well. So the new pillows I bought just before cpap are just in the way!

Um... not sure how heavy. Definitely hefty, at least with the amount of water I've got in it, which is about 2 small watering cans worth. But if you buy from Amazon, they have a pretty friendly return policy, so I don't see why you couldn't check it out (with free standard shipping) and then send it back if it doesn't suit...

I've been using the Chiroflow (same as the Mediflow) long before I started this therapy (it's listed in my profile below) and there have been other forum members who have discovered them over the years. If you do a forum Search, you'll find them listed in posts quite a ways back.

I can't sleep with a "standard" pillow anymore......I've tried it.

I've found that for me a half gallon of water is about the right amount.

Water pillows are great, esp in the sumer when you need something cool behind your head and neck. I had one in the 70's and it eventually sprung a leak, but I loved it. It didn't really weigh that much that I remember, of course I was 40 years younger then and nothing seemed heavy to me because I was strong then. It was kind of smallish- maybe was 12 inches by 9 inches, so didn't hold that awful much water but it sure was nice when we lived in a trailer without A/C one summer!

I switched to a water pillow before starting CPAP when I was having problems with neck pain. It took a bit to adjust the amount of water but overall I like the water pillow. They are certainly much heavier than most pillows but this just means they stay in one place very well. I find the pillow works fine with CPAP and the nasal mask, I'm able to sleep on my side with no real leak problems.

Will the Mediflow use a standard size pillow case? Or do I need to spring for the $15 "quilted cover" as well?

I've always used standard pillow cases with mine.

I was wondering if a couple of these type of pillows would be a comfortable alternative for those people who have more events on their back and start out sleeping on their side but often turn over onto back and not realize it. Seems leaning back onto a couple of pillows would be much more comfortable than tennis balls and not cause a wake up which is what we want to limit. Most pillows are too light and slide out with the least amount of leaning against them. One pillow might not be enough support to keep off the back but two would probably be high enough. Sort of a soft wall to lean on. The weight of the pillow might be enough to prevent slippage.
