How does prednisone effect sleep?

Post by jbn3boys » Tue Feb 01, 2011 4:02 pm

I'm on a 10 day course of prednisone (tapering doses the last half) for a sinus infection that just won't go away. I know all the side effects of prednisone (weird feelings, increased hunger, weight gain, etc). I've been on it before but not since starting xpap. I took my dose yesterday at 3pm. Per the pharmacist, today's dose was late morning, and starting tomorrow I will take the daily dosage in the morning. I'm wondering what effect it has on sleep, especially what, if any, effect it has on centrals.

I'm trying to adjust to bipap, and have to give each setting two weeks before reporting back to the doctor. I'm really hoping this 10 days doesn't totally throw off my numbers, so I would have to essentially re-do this time for the sake of the tediously slow titration/experiment/failure of bipap before I am moved on to the next machine of choice. I'm not sure I even want to tell my sleep doc that I'm on prednisone (although she has access to that info--same medical group).

I was on it over a week ago but it was complicated by the iodine in my system. It gave me major headaches by bedtime and upset my stomach so I was also taking gravol and ibuprofen. And yes I slept badly but then I was also in the middle of a move. So my experience won't help you very much.

Crohn's disease patients often find themselves on a course of prednisone. And it commonly causes havoc w/their sleep, including making them very hyper during the day. Many joke the only time their houses get a thorough "spring cleaning" is when they are on a course of pred, the med they hate to love. And, yep, for many, as BlackSpinner has reported, pred can cause some real killer headaches. It is a wicked drug that can do wonders - short term.

I can tell you that I had a hard time on it... and when I stopped it, it was easier to breathe.

I have been on pred at times for my rheumatoid arthritis. It makes me agitated, jumpy, moody, hungry and I can't sleep. Our bodies normally make cortisol and the amount is high in the morning and tapers off in the evening so we can sleep. On pred that sometimes doesn't happen.

I would take the pred very early in the morning with a good meal. So hopefully the side effects will wear off by bed time.

I too am on and off prednisone for RA and it makes it really hard for me to sleep. I usually am on a low dose--5-10mgs a day. I get very wired and people at work can tell when I am taking it--they say I talk much faster! At night it makes it hard for me to be still or to sleep. Some nights like this I am up at 2 a.m. cleaning stuff. But, when I am in a flare, the prednisone allows me to function and dress and feed myself, so I just put up with the energy bursts.

I was on that little pack for a week. I was on vacation so couldn't check my numbers....But, I had no side affects at all. Maybe it's because I didn't know I should expect any. I slept very well on it too.
I took it as perscribed on the package.

I was on it for a week. It made me euphoric. I didn't need sleep. It was fun.

I just did a 6 day course, and the pharmacist told me to take it in the morning because it WOULD interfere with sleep. I was having sleeping issues anyway from the asthmatic bronchitis, but I don't think I noticed any big differences because of the Prednisone.

I did have the other usual nasty side effects--the munchies and a very emotional day. Usually I'm very angry and grumpy on that emotional day, but this time I was teary and just felt like I was barely hanging on to the world. Of course, it was the day the physical move of my office had to be completed and I felt like dirt. My husband and the movers did all the physical work and I just sat around trying to get enough air in to walk across the room. I was sucking on my inhaler every 2 hours, NOT a good day Boo Hoo, I'm STILL feeling sorry for myself for that rotten time What a whiner!

(I'm fine now! My peak flows are back in the green zone BEFORE I take my meds ).

Yes It was better then marijuana, until the shovel hit the head! I should have been packing and organizing but instead it was whoo hoo, who cares, for the first 4 hours.

It truly is a drug you love to hate. My sister has Crohn's disease and I can always tell when she is taking prednisone, she has an appittie, gains weight, looks fuller in the face and feels pretty darn good. She hates taking it. She has sleeping problems also, struggles with insomnia, snores, you know the symptoms. She refuses to do a sleep study and says her Ambien CR works just fine for her. You can tell when she has one of those days when she is wiped out, but don'r know if it's the sleep problem or the Crohns,

When needed, I take 50mg per day for 5 days, 40mg for 4 days, 30mg for 3 days, ect....

Trying to sleep is "interesting" to say the least!
When I go to bed, I'm so exhusted from RUNNING around all day, I pretty much pass out dead to the world. Then wake up fully refreshed an HOUR latter ready to start all over again! I don't get up, I try going back to sleep, and usually end up with 3-4 of these "naps" of 1-2 hours as my night's sleep. Even though the sleep is fragmented, it's the best, most restful sleep I get. Of course that could be just an illusion caused by the drugs?????

Definitely a drug I love to hate!

My first night I "thought" I slept good, but my numbers were horrible, and I felt like crap. Last night (second night), I was wide awake for at least an hour and a half. But, my numbers looked much better today, even if I take out that time I was awake. Here's hoping by taking the prednisone earlier from now on, that it might be a little better. I just really hope it doesn't screw up my numbers too much for the "trial" on bipap.

jbn, I had a running battle off and on w/really bad sinus infections. Get it cleared up and a few weeks later there it was again. When family doctor and I couldn't get rid of it for good he sent me to an ENT. The ENT injected a corticosteroid in each nostril and it was like a miracle!!! I could breathe immediatelyl! He sent me home w/a 10 day dose of antibiotic. A few weeks later the sinus problem was back. He tried to steroid injections again. It took a day or two before the easy breathing was restored, plus another round of antibiotic, of course. W/in a few weeks the sinus problem was back yet again. The steroid injections did NOTHING this time. NOTHING. The antibiotic cleared it up - for a few weeks.

THEN!!!! I was in to see my family doctor for another reason and his PA came in just to say hi and we talked about my doggone sinuses. She said she had had a rough time w/continuing sinus infections for a couple of years and then - a 30 day course of an antibiotic instead the usual 7 or 10 days and she hasn't had a problem since. So we decided I'd try the 30 day course too. Heck, at that point what did I have to lose?? I loaded up on a good probiotic as well and did the 30 day bit. That was 8-9 years ago. And I've not had a real sinus infection since. I might get a drippy nose for a few days, maybe even stuffed up for a few hours - but that's it.

Well, I should be good then. I had three weeks on one antibiotic, plus 6 days of the new one (which stays in your body for a minimum of 5 days after the last treatment). That should equal roughly 31 days. Maybe I'll be good for a long time now!
