Thank you, everyone, for chiming in on this. I appreciate the input.
Patrick, I DO take pain killers, but I take them anywhere from 4-6 hours BEFORE going to bed. I've been taking them, at the same dosage, for over a year. I guess this could be a reaction to the medications, but I doubt it because of the timing.
I was really curious if anyone else had experienced anything like this. Like I said, it's not a nightly occurrence. When it happens, however, it's extremely unsettling. It *FEELS* like something is really wrong...
Oh well. I guess I'll just add it to my list of "who the heck knows.....":)

Re: Falling Asleep - Does This Sound Weird?
Madalot,
I get a similar feeling now and then. It's mostly when I'm very tired - not just sleepy but physically tired. For instance when I'm traveling if I've pushed hours too long when traveling in order to get home downing tons of coffee as I go, arrive totally exhausted and then, when I get there have to spend a long time shoveling out a place to park the car before I can fall into bed. Normally I'd sit around and unwind but if I'm so sleepy that I need to go to bed immediately I may feel like that. I've always thought it was an affect of that last spurt of adrenalin rushing around in a body that just can't stay awake any longer. Is it possible you're getting too tired at the very end of the day?

I've thought about this and I have to say that I don't think so. I don't do much during the day to make myself that tired. In fact, today was the first day in over a week that I've even left the house! In the last week, this has happened to me twice that I can remember. One night, I went to bed at my usual time and the other night, it was a little earlier. Neither day was unusual or different from the other one.MidnightOwl wrote:Is it possible you're getting too tired at the very end of the day?
But thanks for the idea to consider. I'm open to anything to think about that would explain anything that I ask about!!

I think you have to follow intuition on that. When I had the feelings that I could slip away when falling asleep, I tried to convince myself that it was my imagination or that for some reason I just hadn't noticed it before. I think our minds give us a lot of warnings and we choose to overthink issues and ignore our intuition. I know I am going to be more attentive to those intuitive thoughts now.Madalot wrote:Thank you, everyone, for chiming in on this. I appreciate the input.

You know something, Kimberly -- you're right. I spent the first 38 years of my life being ashamed and ridiculed for my weakness and being told it was my fault. When I was in my early 20's, I decided I was tired of being out of shape and started a serious exercise program to get myself in shape. I worked for over two months and at the end of that time frame, I still could only exercise for about 5 minutes before my muscles were so sore and I could hardly breathe. I could NEVER get beyond that. I know, now, that is called "exercise intolerance," a symptom of a Mitochondrial Myopathy.KimberlyM wrote:I think you have to follow intuition on that. But it took another 14 years before it was taken seriously. Something does not feel right about these episodes.

Re: Falling Asleep - Does This Sound Weird?
I thought those that had replied to this would find this interesting....
It happened again last night. What's interesting is that I heard a noise during the episode, causing me to stir and sit up (I listened to see if the noise continued). The weird feeling continued, even though I sat up. The noise stopped so I laid back down and the feeling continued until I fell asleep.
I don't believe whatever is going on is occurring because I'm on the verge of falling asleep.

I'm going to have look this one up!! I have never heard of this.secret agent girl wrote:As an aside, your description made me think of "exploding head syndrome" aka "auditory sleep starts". I wonder if, since there are auditory and visual versions, if there could be a kinetic or somatic version... (I'm not saying I think you have this, I was just reminded of it from your description.)
Very kind of you! What I lack in physical strength, I make up for with attitude.secret agent girl wrote:For all your muscle weakness, you are one strong lady!
