S9 Autoset Pulsating when stop breathing?

Post by Jayjonbeach » Tue Jan 25, 2011 6:57 pm

I just got a used machine and I've already noticed that if I stop breathing, the machine more or less starts pulsating, is this normal?

I had the Elite before and depending on the EPR setting I think it did this a FEW times only, most or close to all of the time the machine would do nothing if I held my breath for 20 or 30 seconds.

With the Autoset, if I hold my breath, after about 4 or 5 seconds the machine seems to pulsate, I don't think this is the algorithm...?

TIA

Yes, I think it does. I've felt that when I hold my breath...three or four very soft pulses. I'm guessing that it is testing if the airway is open...but that is only a guess.

If you do stop breathing while somulant, the S9 Autoset attempts to discover whether you have an airway blockage (I.e. experiencing a obstructive apnea) or an open airway (i.e. experiencing a central apnea) in order to decide whether any dynamic (auto) adjustment to PAP treatment is indicated. The approach used is perceived by some users as a pulsing effect.

Cheers,

Bill

Yep, testing to see if its obstructive or central in nature. Normal. In APAP mode more important so the machine knows if it needs to ramp up pressure or not but used in otherwise to classify the event.

This is curious, I just tried it again now in CPAP mode and the same thing happens which technically should NOT be the algorithm.

btw - did you mean somnolent?

I noticed the soft pulsing too. Figured it was checking for pressure or maybe had to do with Smartstart.

The machine reports central (open airway) vs. obstructive apneas no matter which mode it is on. It needs the pulsations (forces oscillation technique) to make the distinction.
