Back to the MDE

Post by Artiem » Fri Dec 02, 2005 5:15 pm

Well tonight marks the end of my first week on the hose. I'm not loving the mask but I'm beginning to start sleeping a bit at nights. It's not the pressure -- it's the leaks and the uncomfortable position on the pillow and the AWARENESS of this THING on my face. SO... I called the MDE and said I'm looking for something different, mask-wise. I have the ComfortClassic which perhaps is a bit of a misnomer, IMHO. I'm soliciting advice on masks... and I'm betting it may come in wide and varied form. However, someone mentioned the Swift nose pillows and looking at them online, it looks like that setup might work for me. There's several ways to configure it and I could actually wear my glasses, which is out of the question with the mask I have now. So to bring this ramble to a conclusion, could I get some feedback from the tribe here on: 1. The Swift 2. The CPAPPro 3. The ComfortCurve 4. Nasal Aire II and 5. New Version Breeze Sleepgear.

Here's my thoughts: I hate the red marks on my face and the air leaks. My pressure's only 12 right now so I should be able to use nose pillows or whatever without too much trouble. And after looking at all the options out there, it appears to me that my insurance company just sent me home with the cheapest possible mask available on the continent without much thought about efficacy or comfort. I must say, I'm just shocked...

At a pressure of 12 I have to say the Swift might start getting noisey. My pressure is only 8 and for me it's like.... silent... but others report going above 11 seems to be where it begins getting noisey. Don't get me wrong... i LOVE my Swift, but... information is what you come here for, right? And that seems to be how all the info is coming together on the Swift. I love it because there's nothing on my face and the headgear is so easy and minimal.

The ResMed Activa and the Ultra Mirage are GREAT if you want obscene noises.

Well, I don't have personal experience with all of the masks you mentioned. There is a thread on Swift vs. Breeze that you might find interesting. I haven't done a scientific count on this, but it seems to me there are a lot more Swift users than Breeze users on the board, but the Breeze is something to consider. I've got one on order for myself right now. You can look up ComfortCurve, there is a lot of info on that. That seems to be a love it or hate it kind of mask. Nasal Aire II..is that the one that has little tubes that actually go up into your nose? Like standard oxygen cannulas? I believe that's a love or hate sort of thing also. I seem to remember lots of reports of discomfort due to the nostril things. Never heard of the CPAPPro....I'll have to look that one up.

I do have the Swift and I really like it. Easy to order since it comes with all sizes of nasal pillows. You can experiment and find the set that works best for you. Some discussion of how noisy it is. I use an APAP with pressures tending to be from 8-14 and I don't notice the noise. You generally start out with a lower pressure anyway and hit the higher pressures (and more noise) when you are sleeping soundly. But then I kind of like swooshy noises anyway. But the Swift is easy to adjust and easy to use, not much on your face, not claustrophobic at all....it has a lot of things going for it. Except perhaps the noise factor, so first examine yourself to see just how important silence is to you....remembering that they haven't invented the perfect mask yet, all have something to complain about.

The Activa is frequently touted as an excellent mask, especially good for beginners. Easy to get a good seal, works very well. That's what I've heard repeatedly. And I personally can't stand the thing and I've tried and tried. Go figure. As I said, they haven't invented the mask that is perfect for everyone.

Good luck! Be prepared to probably buy several masks...that's what most of us seem to have done. Then when you get too annoyed with one choice, there is always another in the drawer....
