2 weeks on BiPap

Post by jbn3boys » Thu Jan 20, 2011 12:42 pm

So, I've completed two weeks on BiPap. I still feel about the same as I have all along--no better than pre-cpap. If anything, I am more tired/sleepy than I was before. My leaks have been pretty well controlled, no mouth breathing, and I have maintained a pretty routine sleep hygiene pattern (no big changes). I have NO idea why a few days look pretty good, and most of the days don't look so good. I have only felt "good" maybe a day and a half during this two weeks. I will be sending my reports to the doctor tomorrow, but I wondered if anyone would like to give any input based on these charts....or just general impressions from them.

I'm trying, but after 4 1/2 months on cpap/apap before bilevel, I'm starting to get frustrated with not seeing results.

echoing secret agent girl's statment, both as another who's struggled to make it work and as a former midwesterner (who's still a midwesterner at heart and always will be).

jbn3boys---you've had it far worse than me: At least my AHI is good. All I have to deal with is feeling lousy in the daytime and fighting the insomnia monster at night. You can't even take some solace in saying "At least my AHI shows the machine is doing it's job." My heart goes out to you. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I hope that you have a chance to have a long talk with the sleep doc about central, complex, and mixed apnea at your next meeting. And which one(s) you might have and what evidence backs that conclusion up. And where your treatment is likely to go from here: When is "good enough" all there is" and is this "good enough"?

Best of luck to you.

I wish I had good advice to offer. My overall AHI pattern is similar to yours, after also 4 months of treatment--on straight CPAP in my case. Virtually all of my events are centrals, which wasn't the case in my initial sleep study. The doctor who interpreted my study suggested suggested that I may have complex apnea and may need BiPap or an ASV. Since like you I am not fully satisfied with my treatment results (feeling better for sure, but not as much as I think I should), I've made another appointment with the sleep doctor to discuss whether we should now be exploring those options. Sadly, she's booked for the next 5 weeks, so I'm going to have to hang in there until then.
