Post by WGOODIE » Thu Jan 20, 2011 9:17 am

I HAVE BEEN HAVING TROUBLE SLEEPING WITH MY CPAP MACHINE, BECAUSE OF MY STUFFY NOSE DURING THE NIGHT. I HAVE USED THE SALINE RINSE, AND I STILL CAN'T BREATHE. SO I TAKE THE MASK OFF TO GET SOME RELIEF. NEED HELP IN SLEEPING AT NIGHT. THANKS

First suggestion is to change the humidifier settings if you use a humidifier.

Consider turning it DOWN as well as UP since a humidifier that is too HIGH can also create problems with nasal congestion.

If you don't have a humidifier, adding one to the cpap machine might help with stuffy nose.

I have had this problem since day one. I have learned to accept this since I no longer use Afrin. I get up in the middle of the night after 2 or 3 hours of sleep, go downstairs, feed the fire, read or watch tv. after about 1.5 hours I clear up enough to go back to bed for another 2 or 3 hours, then repeat. I just live with it unfortunately.

I have the opposite happen to me that seems odd. I am clear until the minute I take off my mask. Then everything clogs up for about 10 min or so.

These are some solutions that I have used for a stuffy nose/congestion:

1. Astepro prescription nasal spray - does NOT cause rebound like Afrin
2. Nasal rinse - AYR saline - comes with a bottle
3. Zyzal prescrption 10 mg each night or zyrtec each night - to keep stuffy nose due to allergies from making a bed for infection
4. I found that I needed to turn my humidifer up slightly - so it is between 2 and 3 on my s8. Some people find that turning humidity up or down makes a big difference. Once I found my comfort level on my humidifier, it gave my sinuses great relief and I no longer have a sore throat either from our hotwater baseboard heat in the winter.

I use a Swift FX with nasal pillows, but during the few times that I had a severe sinus infection I switched to a nasal mask and that felt more comfortable during that time. I also keep a full face mask on standby for emergency use only for if there ever comes a time when I cannot breathe through my nose at all, due to severe congestion/sinus infection. (I haven't had to use it yet!)

Best regards,

Jersey Girl
