Mirage Quattro Question

Post by dkeat » Wed Jan 19, 2011 8:48 am

Greetings

I am an infrequent user of full-face masks. I only use them when my nose is closed for some reason. The last time I tried using my Mirage Quattro there was some problem, probably with the mask. It sounded fairly loud and after a while the machine did an automatic shut-off like it would do if there was a large leak. My suspicion is that the vent on the mask, which is apparently supposed to close during normal operations but open if there is a power failure or some such thing, is not working properly and is stuck in the "open" position.

Is anyone familiar with this kind of problem? I have no idea how to handle it. A routine visual inspection of the mask reveals nothing out of the ordinary, nothing to tweak.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Sleep well,

Dave

Sometimes on my Quattro, the plug that covers the supplementary oxygen plug-in (I don't know the official name for it) comes out. It's a rectangular plug just underneath the swivel, covering 2 different oxygen inlets. You might check that. I've had mine somehow come out in the middle of the night and had to search for it in the sheets before I could get back to sleep. When it's gone, it's pretty noisy.

Best wishes,
Tony

If you look in the instruction book that came with the Quattro (it's available online if you can't find the booklet), it will show you how to take the Quattro apart for cleaning and identify that little valve. Once you know where it is you can see for yourself if it's working by turning the machine on.

I find it's a little tricky to get the cushion seated "just right" after cleaning and that can cause large leakage. There are so many parts to this mask which equals many things that can go wrong either because the parts are not put back together exactly right OR a little part has failed.

Well thanks to both of you for your answers. Is it possible that my Quattro doesn't have a port for supplemental oxygen? I know what you are referring to, I've seen them on other masks but not on this one.

I think that when the mask is on the valve is supposed to close when you exhale so that the exhaled air is forced out through the masks vents and not back into the CPAP tube. Anyway, I took the valve out and put it back in and now it seems to be working again. Maybe it was just not pushed in all the way or something jerky like that.

Frankly, these masks shouldn't be THAT touchy.

Sleep well,

Dave

THe port for the oxygen attachment is on the bottom of the mask under the elbow. Every quattro mask will have one. It is covered by a clear rubber piece. You can also check the valve and take it off. There is a plastic piece that the valve is connected to. Grab that piece on the sides and pop it off. check to make sure that the rubber flap is there and not clogged up. Sometime the flap falls out and the mask leaks out of the port where it should be attached.

This video may help as well. http://www.sleepnation.tv/post/1484553281/episode5

Sometimes when I put the cushion back on, the bottom doesn't get snapped in all the way to where the blue plastic lip doesn't align and go into the slot it's supposed to go into at the bottom of the mask, and air will leak very profusely from the resultant gap between the cushion and the mask. Took me half an hour to find that one night. If this isn't the issue your having maybe someone else with a similar problem will benefit from this though.

I've been doing pretty well with my quattro but about 1:30 last night it seemed to blow a gasket (my pressure felt like it was maxing out) and I could not get it to seal again. Very frustrating. Fortunately I have other masks. I hooked up another and went back to sleep.

But yes, they are touchy!

Thanks again to all who responded. I did find the oxygen port in the end. It's a bit different than the ones I've seen in the past. And the best thing is, I don't need to use it. It seems it's on good and tight as well.

I tried using the mask again last night and this time the machine ran a bit longer before finally shutting down automatically. I have no idea why it is doing this. With the Comfort Lite nasal mask it runs all night without a hitch. The only thing I can come up with is some sort of a leak. But the mask is fitting tightly, there is no air escaping from the sides that I am able to hear or detect with my fingers, eyes, etc.

Maybe it just doesn't like being hooked up to a Resprironics APAP .

Sleep well

Dave

Greetings

As I have been unable to locate a leak around my face or air coming from the mask I assume the problem is an oversensitive "leak detection" on the part of the M-series machine. Is there anyone out there who would know how to disable this function. I contacted Respironics but so far they have only acknowledge that it can be turned off. They won't tell me how to do it.

Sleep well,

Dave

They won't tell you because you have to go into the clinician's menu, and then you might change other things as well. Oh, dear, you might actually make your treatment WORK for you! How awful!!!!!!!!

Do a search here for either "Respironics M clinician's menu" or Respironics M Clinician's manual" and that should get you to the right place.

Greetings Janknitz

Thanks for the tip. Silly of me, because I have my own copy. God knows why I didn't think to look there first. Possibly I DO need that extra oxygen .

Sleep well,

Dave
