Does anyone use the Oracle as their "regular" mask?

Post by WestCoastCdnGrl » Wed Jan 12, 2011 3:11 am

I was just wondering how you like it.... I'm weighing my options as far as masks go and am considering getting the Oracle to try.

I am a mouth breather who sleeps on her side and has chronic sinus problems (more often than not, one or both sides are plugged day and night... L side is completely blocked and R side is about 75% plugged right now) so I am thinking that the Oracle might be a good "fit" for me.

I like that it's a "mouth only" mask and how compact it is (by virtue of being an oral mask). I think that I would be able to get a better handle on leaks with a smaller area to have to deal with. I also like that I would be able to wear my glasses while wearing the mask.

The only major thing that I don't like about the Oracle that I've seen so far is the need to use nasal prongs. Seeing as I've been a mouth breather for as long as I can remember (I had my tonsils and adenoids removed in 1975, when I was 3 because I sounded like "a snoring old man" when I slept... my parents were shocked at how quiet I slept after my surgery... sadly, the snoring has long since come back) and I have partially plugged sinuses as it is, do you think the nasal plugs would really be necessary for me in this instance? This is a potential deal breaker, seeing as I have a sensitive nose and I can't stand the feeling of anything in my nose for long periods of time... hell, I couldn't even tolerate 3 night test run of my Mom's nasal pillows.

I currently have a Mirage Quattro. I like it, but I find that it leaks if I roll onto my side. Since I'm still so new to CPAP and adjusting to life with my "attachments," I'm trying various options (have tried Remzzz's with limited success, and will be trying Pad A Cheek products next)... but in the event that they fail, I am curious to know what others think of the Oracle and would love to hear from anyone who uses it as their "go to" mask.

Thanking you all for your input and advice!

If you have a sensitive nose, you will not like the Oracle. You must use nose plugs with this mask. Try holding your nose and breathing through your mouth for an extended period of time...that's how the Oracle works.

That bit I don't care about - mouth breathing is second nature to me... as previously mentioned my sinuses are plugged most days so, over the past 20+ years, it's forced me to be a mouth breather, especially when I sleep. (right now, R side is almost completely blocked and L side is partially blocked - if I close my mouth to breathe out my nose, I can't breathe silently)

I just don't want to have to use the intranasal nose plugs... if initial plugging is required by all users and I can use a swimmer's nose plug (i.e. an external plug), then I have no problem... it's an internal plug that I have an issue with. However I am thinking that with my sinus problem, this perceived "issue" may be moot because, from what I've read, the plugs are meant to be used short-term to train the user to breathe exclusively through their mouth... seeing as I do that all the time anyway, I probably don't need to use the plugs and was wanting feedback about that.
