ff mask and sore throat

Post by pbsd » Tue Jan 11, 2011 1:58 pm

Hi All,

I use a ff mask and have had a sore throat for about a week now. I breath from my nose and my mouth and I do notice that my mouth is dry. I should note that I recently switched masks to the res med quattro. Before I made the switch I noticed a lot of rain out in my other mask, so I turned the humidity down to about 1. Do you think I should raise it again with the new mask? I don't have any other symptoms of a cold. Just persistent sore throat.

Is this likely from the CPAP? I have also done a search on this and someone posted that it may take a while for your throat tissues to adapt. Is that the case?

Looking forward to hearing your recommendations.

with mouth breathing you need a working humidifier so why not tape the lips and train yourself to nose breathe only, its better for your health
yes turn humidifier up, you can heat bedroom for a while to reduce rainout

How's it going? Is the sore throat better?

Hey thanks for asking. No it's not yet.

I cut up an old sweater and wrapped it around the tube. I am debating whether or not to raise the humidity. If I do and I get leaks then I will be futzing with the mask in the middle of the night and it will keep my wife and 11 month old up. If I don't I will have a sore throat in the morning.

Raise your humidifier level a little each night to see if you'll feel better. If you feel better but get rainout use a tubing cover. You can make one out of socks or buy one. I would have a sore throat on a setting of 1 others do fine on 1.

It is so nice of you not wanting to disturb your family, however they probably want you to be comfortable and you don't want to invite throat problems. Mucus in the throat serves as protection: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mucus

My husband says when I first began XPAP therapy he got used to the fidgeting as quickly as he got used to sleeping with someone else when we first got married. My thinking is your family will too : )

I agree with turning up the humidifier a little bit at a time. Mine has numbered notches on it and I turn it up 2 more higher number during the summer when it's particularly dry where I now live and down one in the winter. You may find yourself doing the same. I'd rather have a bit of water in my mask than a dry throat.

Best wishes.
