I have been on xPAP for just over 5 years. I was unable to tolerate nasal masks, so I use a full-face (quattro and soon, quattro fx). I have battled dry mouth every day for the past 5 years. I don't mean just dry, rather the kind of dry that even a glass of water doesn't fix. I usually have to take a mouthful of water and hold it in my mouth swishing it around for a couple minutes to get everything feeling normal again. With my old machine (Remstar M Series), I could only turn up the humidifier to 3, as any higher and I ended up with major rainout and water in the hose. I had resigned myself to a life of dry-mouthed mornings.
A few days ago, I got a new machine. I got the S9 Autoset with the H4i humidifier and the Climateline heated hose. The first couple of nights I had the humidifier set to "auto" with a temp setting of 70 degrees, as I didn't think I could tolerate warmer air blowing in my face than that. I woke up the following mornings and still had pretty bad dry mouth, but maybe slightly less intense. Last night, I set the humidifier to 80 degrees. When I woke around 2am (damn work pager), I noticed that my mouth was not overly dry and didn't even have to swish water before placing a phone call. I went back to bed and was again woken by my work pager at 630 this morning. I got up and made the phone call that I needed to, again without requiring the normal two-minute-swishing. I do not remember any times in the past 5 years that this has happened. I am praying that tonight will yield the same results!
Another plus to this machine is how quiet it is. My M Series was quiet, but passed a loud noise through to the mask as I breathed. The S9 is completely silent. The only noise I hear is the air blowing out (quietly) through the vent holes on exhale. My fiancee is extremely happy! This is my 3rd machine/humidifier combo and I have finally found a setup that I am truly happy with!!!
