Hi all,
I am new to the board and to sleep apnea treatment. I had a sleep study done in mid-December which measured an AHI of 13.3 at 0 air pressure and an AHI of 2.0 at 11 cm. I have a very high insurance deductible so I opted to get a machine on the "secondary" market. I first bought an S8 Compact and a ComfortGel full mask, both of which worked well enough. But I wanted to monitor the course of treatment, so I ended up getting an S9 Autoset along with the ResScan software.
My question is about the mask fit function of the S9. I simply cannot figure out what it expects. If I connect the mask to the ClimateLine tube and put the mask to my face, the machine reports a bad fit. This despite the fact that there is absolutely no leak that I can feel anywhere around the edges of the mask. The air does leak from the vent in the front of the mask, which I assume is there for exhalation. The only way I can make the machine happy is if I unhook the mask and block the tube with my hand so no air whatsoever can get out. Somehow that doesn't seem right.
Would someone tell me how this test is supposed to be used? Should I be blocking the vent in the mask and holding my breath? For the entire 3 minutes that the test run?
Thanks in advance.

Re: ResMed S9 Autoset Mask Fit question
What type of mask is your S9 set to?
There is an adjustment for pillows, nasal, and full face.
Make sure it's set correctly.
If it's set to pillows, the machine is expecting little to no leak, compared with full face that has the vent that you've already noticed.

Re: ResMed S9 Autoset Mask Fit question
The mask is a full face ComfortGel and the machine is currently set to Full Face.

The only way I can the smiley face is to hold my breath and close the mask vent. Could this indicate that there is something wrong with the machine?
Here's what the previous owner's leak data looks like. Is this normal?

Re: ResMed S9 Autoset Mask Fit question
Is the hose setting also correctly set to Climateline?

Re: ResMed S9 Autoset Mask Fit question
I don't see an explicit way to set the hose type in either the patient or the clinician's menus. But the machine does "know" that I have the ClimateLine hose connected since it enables the tube heat control menu.
I did a little more testing and found that the machine give me the happy face when I block half of the mask vents. But it I take the slightest breath, I get the frowny face again. Could it be that the test is tuned for a mask that lets out less air that the ComfortGel?

Re: ResMed S9 Autoset Mask Fit question
Check the hose for a leak where the hose meets the rubber cuff. The Slimeline and the Climateline is well know for developing small tears at that location.
Re: ResMed S9 Autoset Mask Fit question
Kempo, you're right. I inspected the hose and found a hole right smack in the middle. What a bummer! The hose's been out of the bag for less than a day. Oh well, I'm sure I have some duct tape somewhere around here. I'm just relieved it isn't the machine. That would have been much more expensive to fix. Thanks for the help.
Re: ResMed S9 Autoset Mask Fit question
I've had experience with the leaky slimline along with many other forum members. The climateline is the same way. It's a huge problem for Resmed and they have done nothing about it.
