Future Obstructive Sleep Apnea treatments (5-10 years away?)

Post by linagee » Tue Dec 28, 2010 7:21 am

I had this idea of a way to treat obstructive sleep apnea by implanting a small metal object in the epiglottis. (Or other parts of the throat that may collapse.) Then you would sleep on some sort of special pad that keeps this open during the night using a magnetic field electrically induced. (Add in some computer circuitry and you might even be able to sense position of the metal implanted epiglottis, increase/decrease magnetic strength based on oximetry, etc.) Of course, like 99% of my ideas, this has already been studied and someone is probably working on a device just like I described. Maybe we will see something like my idea in 10-15 years? (I am revising my estimate. I forgot that everything medical has to undergo at least 5 years of testing.) Here is a study they did on holding open canine throats using implanted magnets: http://www.eclips.consult.com/eclips/ar ... 07)70135-X
