Is anyone else having dry nasal passages?

Post by Lee Lee » Wed Dec 22, 2010 6:09 pm

I guess it's the weather. Humidity is so low here in Virginia due to the very cold weather. Like last year, I'm having a terrible time with dried out nasal passages. Last year, I got a nasty infection from it.
I use the AYR gel, but it's just not helping.
I wonder if there is some kind of gel (like vaseline, but NOT vaseline) that I could use?
Anyone have any ideas???

Yep, in NC we have had some days with extremely low dewpoints and low temperatures. On these days I can be outside all day and my nasal passages do not get dry. However, when I come into the house with the forced-air furnace running frequently, in a few hours my passages will start to dry.

For relief, I do a neti pot rinse upon arising and another one just before bedtime. I use the Ayr Gel sometimes during the day but I do not like to use it with CPAP nasal pillows.

Sorry, but I cannot recommend anything better than Ayr Gel.

I use a saline nasal spray. The heating system dries out the house as well as my nasal passages...saline solution also helps with the daily sneezing fits. Haven't found anything that works all the time...I just live with it and won't give up the cpap.

Why not buy an external humidifier from CPAP.COM?

Thanks all.
I do use the saline spray. In fact, I may over-use it. And of course, the AYR gel. But in the winter, even with the humidifier turned up on the CPAP, I get so dry that I start sneezing and have burning nasal passages and watery eyes.
I used this gel last year, Bactroban Nasal and it was wonderful. But it's for when you have a bacterial infection. I was hoping there was some kind of gel that had no medicine in it.
This is one of the down sides of CPAP therapy, but I'll take it.
Merry Christmas!

Here is something (not a gel) you might try http://www.xlear.com/nasal-spray.aspx , Xlear Xylitol Nasal Spray.

It is only $6.99, so that is cheap to experiment with.

Drinking plenty of water can help mucous membranes stay moist:

I use the Grossan nasal irrigator, and the solution that they recommend. It is a moisturizing and cleaning solution.... I believe they also make a gel. Here is link to the product on Amazon: http://amzn.com/B000H84F60

Some of the saline sprays have additives and preservatives in them, and those always burn my nose. Look for brands that contain only two ingredients--saline and sterile water. Nothing else. Simply Saline is one brand, but the drug stores all have their own generic varieties for less money.

Yes--I live in Arizona and you cannot get much drier than it is here LOL! I use the Linsonoh Lanolin under my nose and just inside the nares. I turn up the humidifier when we have to run the air when it is hot here. Right now it is dry but not near as dry as summer here. I have mine on a setting of 2. Sometimes my sinuses do get very dry and bleed a little. That is when I use the nasal rinses.

Virginia feels like Arizona right now! I also keep the AC on, even in the winter, and that may be why it's so dry. I get so hot at night with the mask and the warm humidified air.
