Sleep cycle question

Post by Woody » Sun Dec 19, 2010 5:27 am

I have a question about my odd sleep pattern that I had BEFORE starting cpap. I sleep through the night now but
before starting cpap I woke up about 6 times and there was a pattern to this. Each sleep period seemed to be longer
like sleep an hour wake up then sleep 70min. wake up, sleep 80min wake up,sleep 90min wake up, sleep 100min
wake up then sleep 2 hours. True that's all in the past now but I still wonder what caused my odd sleep paterna.

Every time an apnea woke you, you needed more sleep afterwards to try and catch up.

Also based on the pattern, it appears to follow the normal progression of sleep throughout the night, talking longer and longer to reach REM sleep, where you were probably having more apnea episodes. During REM sleep our bodies intentionally decrease muscle tone. This allows us to actively dream without acting out our dreams. Unfortunately, this decrease in muscle tone also means that we tend to have more obstructive sleep apneas during REM sleep.

Glad this pattern has changed with your therapy. If you wonder if it makes a difference, just remember this pattern no longer is the "norm" for you.
