Seting Pressure S9 APAP

Post by cortez356 » Wed Dec 15, 2010 6:51 pm

My original prescription was for 6 to 14 for a pressure setting. I kept it that way for about 3 weeks. A week ago I set the low to 6.8 and kept the high at 14. Here are my results from the Rescan statistics:

Dec 9 AHI 2.8 Pressure 6.3,12.4,13.3 ( Median,95th, max)

Dec 10 AHI .9 Pressure 7.6,11.3,12.7

Dec.11 AHI 2.5 Pressure 7.4,9.6,12.2

Dec.12 AHI .7 Pressure 7.3,8.5,9.4

Dec.13 AHI 1.1 Pressure 7.3,8.9,10.7

Dec.14 AHI 1.9 Pressure 7.2,9.8,11.6

Originally I thought I would be able to narrow my pressure settings but with these results I dont know what to do. I have had some max readings of 13.8. Breathing is quite natural with those low pressures.

Those AHI's are low enough to make me suggest If it ain't broke, don't fix it. So if you're feeling good, then why worry with tinkering?

Well, there's not much to complain about with any of those numbers. You can see that on nights when you have higher AHI, your Pmax also was higher. And versa vice.

I really don't see any reason to worry about the upper limit pressure. It is frequently said here that you set the upper limit so the machine doesn't run away with your pressure. But I think that might pertain more to the older machines than to modern ones. I've seen no tendency for mine to do that. Main thing is, you don't want to set your Pmin so low that your machine takes a long time to ramp up to pressure when it feels its necessary to chase down an obstructive event.

You might try setting the minimum to 7 or 7.2 or thereabouts and see if that helps. You're always going to have nights when your AHI is high. As time goes by and you get into the groove, you'll find out what makes you sleep and what keeps you awake (Chinese and Italian food for me), those should become fewer.

Italian food, too. I think it's the salt. Or the garlic?

Fortunately the Cardiologist at the Mayo scared the hell out of me. Told me that if I didnt change my lifestyle OSA would be the least of my worries: Diabetes, heart and kidney problems and more. I have since lost 14 lbs. (11 weeks). No more greasy burgers. No more home made fries twice a week, no more ice cream every night. You get the picture. As a bonus my BP dropped to where I now cut one of the pills in half. I no longer use Nexium or any other antacids. I wasnt even grossly overweight. 204 at 6 ft. My goal is less than 180. Havent seen that for 30 years!
