Largest humidifier capacity?
Re: Largest humidifier capacity?
If you need more humidity... there have been stories of folks running two humidifiers in a line from their machine... myself... I add a room humidifier when it gets really cold here.

You might want to take a look at the Fisher & Paykel stand alone humidifiers.... http://www.fphcare.com/userfiles/file/O ... ochure.pdfgvz wrote:but thought I'd ask if anyone knows of an even larger capacity humidifier.
They hold about half a litre.

Re: Largest humidifier capacity?
Bill is correct. I have an F&P HC300 at home and the capacity is 500 ml.
I can certainly understand not wanting to invest in a room humidifer, so I do hope running 2 in series solves your problem. Waking up due to insufficient water would stink...big time.
If running 2 in series doesn't work for you, or you change your mind, I did want to mention another possibility. Not long after I moved into my house, which was in early winter, I noticed that I was not only running out of water very fast (though not nightly), but the house was very dry. That lead me down the path of whole house humification. Not only did that resolve my dryness during the day, it's better for the house and keeping the humdity up (within the bounds of dew point and window condensation), it lower my xPAP humidity needs and allow me to lower the temp in the house a bit, saving some money in the process. The whole house humidifier that I bought for $400 11 years ago has easily been paid for, if not solely by my energy savings in the winter, but definitely from a comfort level. No cracked lips on the rare days when I can't use my xPAP due to sinus issues and, unlike room humidifers, I don't have to constantly add water. Plus, I've been told by several people that keeping the humidity up during the winter helps to maintain the structure of the house. The only downside was that I used to need to lower the humidifer's seeting when it got extremely cold to avoid condensation on my windows/doors. My new HVAC does that automatically now.
Buying the humidifier was the best bang-for-the-buck home improvment I've made since I've been in my house. To be honest, if it were to break, I'd have my HVAC contractor out in a heart beat to replace it.
I'm interested in hearing how 2 in series works for you, though. That is an excellent idea.

Re: Largest humidifier capacity?
I believe that you are right in your guess that turning up the humidifier is going to make it run out more quickly. If you add a second one, consider turning the one attached directly to the machine DOWN so that you don't end up running it dry, which is probably undesirable. With two in series, you should still be able to get more water vapor to your mask than you can now, and for a longer period of time, perhaps enough to last all night.gvz wrote:For various reasons, I was going to crank up my humidifier beyond the half-way point on the H4i knob. All the way up. But considering I am running out already after 6hrs at the half-way point, going any higher may make it run out quicker. Adding a 2nd humidifier may help -- the 2nd one may not do anything if it detects the 1st one's air is already humid enough, but should kick in once the 1st one has emptied. (in theory?)
Let us know if you try this. It will be interesting to hear how it works out.
Re: Largest humidifier capacity?
Putting a second humidifier in series may affect the amount of your pressure setting as you are adding a significant amount of pressure drop thru the second unit. Check with your tech before trying it. Also, an h4i humidifier will hold more water than just to the fill line on the side. I fill it another quarter of an inch above the line. Just make sure you don,t take off the mask until you stop the clap and don,t start it until you have the mask in place, or you will blow water into the hose. Humidification has been a big issue with me. I use a lot of water and often run out before I want to awaken. I even bought a F &P HC 150 out of pocket but it didn,t last as long as my h4i. If you breath thru your mouth you will use more water. Good luck!

You could try a continuous feed system like the Fisher & Paykel MR290 chamber.

Re: Largest humidifier capacity?
The standalone Fisher & Paykel HC 150 humidifier has long been my favorite to use with any brand of cpap machine. Saves money in the long run, too, if a person is inclined to buy different brands of machines. Don't have to buy the "integrated" humidifier for each brand. The F&P HC 150 has its own short connector hose that can go to any cpap/apap/bilevel machine.
Here's an old post comparing the water chamber capacity of a couple of older machines' humidifiers with that of the F&P HC 150:

Go to the above link and click on each chamber and then the spec page to see capacity.
There's a 10 ml difference between the 2.

Re: Largest humidifier capacity?
The limit that is the most important one is "how much humidity can be delivered through the hose and mask without "rain-out" (condensation) occurring?" Having a twenty-gallon (75 liter) tank would not get around this limit!
Until such time as you actually run out of water before waking up (and have filled to the line prior to using), there's no point in discussing a larger tank!
Use of a heated hose will allow more humidity to be delivered than a non-heated hose.
Also, a note about the stand-alone humidifiers. Obviously, they would be more awkward for travel than the integrated variety. What might be less obvious is that while all current CPAP machines are compatible with household (or "hotelhold") voltage in any county on this planet, this is not true of the stand-alone CPAP humidifiers! If you use these in a country that has a different voltage than your own, you'll need a converter (CPAPs only requite an adapter). Also, I don't know if any of the stand-alone humidifiers support a heated hose.
