Replacement Hose

Post by tMC » Sat Nov 20, 2010 5:48 am

So, it is 3:30 am and somehow in the middle of a sound sleep, I roll over on my hose and it breaks. My wife is sleeping so I don't want to disassemble the whole thing and wake her up, but I am guessing that my rolling over on it stretched it out and it broke it somehow. Guess I will figure out how it broke in a few hours.

Now comes the fun part, trying to find a replacement hose on a weekend. I have been searching for a Medical Supply Store, CPAP.com, Amazon.com, etc. Can anyone tell me if I have to have a prescription to buy a replacement CPAP hose? I live in the greater Phoenix, AZ area...does anyone know of a place that is open on a Saturday or Sunday where I can get a replacement hose so I don't have to wait until next week?

The hose I had always felt really cheap, but I covered it up with what I call a "Hose Snuggie" so it made less noise when rubbing against my headboard and the cold plastic didn't wake me up when it rubbed against me in the middle of the night. Any feedback on getting a good quality hose, or are they all the same cheap plastic hose?

Thanks!
tMC

If you can't find a replacement then a garden hose connector (male to male) and duct tape should see you right!

I've not yet had a need to find weekend help, but I think that many home health businesses have someone on-call for after-hours. Check your yellow pages and call a few today to see if they can replace your hose. If they want to gouge you for more than $10-20, do use duct tape to repair your broken hose instead, if possible, until you can order a new one at a reasonable price from cpap.com or similar.

Messed it up, but got it correct now.
Check this site and see if it is close enough to your location. Would be good if they could help out. http://www.cpapnea.com/

I bet you could find some type of substitute tubing at a home depot, in the plumbing or ac parts, and some duct tape. Thats if you dont find a medical supply store open today.
Good Luck.

tMC,

To your question about a prescription, I have not seen that one is needed for a hose or other replacement parts.

I have a couple of thoughts on a way to get by.

When my sleep clinic sent home a loaner APAP to get my pressure, the hose they sent along was a disposable hose that I suspect is commonly used in hospitals. They have the same 22mm connectors as the CPAP machine. It's pretty cheap and the come in 100ft boxes so maybe you could go to a health care facility and get them to give you 6 or so feet. Examples of this stuff are: The other idea is that the outside diameter of 1/2" PVC pipe is very nearly 22mm (nominally 0.840" or 21.3mm). Perhaps a short section of this used as a connector with the aforementioned duct tape to seal will join that together. If you need to buy some (very inexpensive at Lowes or Home Depot; ~$3 for an 8 ft piece), maybe get schedule 315pipe (used mostly for irrigation or other lower pressure) rather than schedule 40 so it has thinner walls and may not impede airflow as much.

Like PLR66 said why not try your DME? They are the ones who should be there to help.
Then make sure you have a spare hose, mask, filters, etc. for these situations.

I know I have used gum and electrical tape to seal a hole until my spare hose came. Place the gum over the hole then tape to hold the gum in place. It worked pretty well and was still flexible.

Unfortunately most DME emergency services are only for oxygen equipment - not for cpap. So, I know that if something happened on the weekend, I would get NO help from my DME. That said, I ALWAYS keep a spare on hand for both my husband and myself. Of course, this doesn't help you.

Other folks have offered some very good temporary solutions. Please let us know how it goes for you - which solution you found worked well.

Best regards,

Jersey Girl

After reading this I have went ahead and ordered a spare hose. I think its well worth the $50 since I use a climateline.

Let us know how it turned out. I think you could also try going to your local hospital and see if if they could sell or give you one. I was also told that Walgreens and some of the drugstores carry DME equipment. You could try checking there.

Home Depot carries tape that stretches. I do not remember the name. It is similar to electrical tape but can withstand very high pressures and is water proof.

A temporary repair can be made by taking a zip loc bag, cutting the seams, and wrapping it around the hose. Secure with tape.

A more flexible temporary repair can be done with Glad wrap, but it isn't as strong as zip loc bag plastic.

Gorilla Tape has gotten me through the weekend. I will be calling my DME today! Thanks to all for your input!
