tingling and numbness

Post by kb2 » Wed Nov 10, 2010 5:52 pm

I recently changed masks for a trial basis .. went from Swift FX to Flexifit 407 ..
I could not tolerate the pillows anymore as much as I wanted that one to work for me - it kept me up all night adjusting them in my nose. I now trying the Flexifit 407 - I like it much better however it bites into the bridge of my nose ..
I saw my DME this morning ..the RT gave me a gel cushion for my nose to prevent it from hurting .. came home ..took a nap with it on - it works so good! But during my nap my upper right side of my lip began to tingle along with the right side of my face - and suddenly went numb! That lasted for about 5 minutes with lingering tingling for a couple hourss later.
My mask was not tight .
Anyone ever had this happen before?? It is a little scarey

I don't want to alarm you but that sounds like a possible light stroke. Go get checked out my friend, as soon as possible.

Most likely just the way you were lying. You have a lot of nerves running on your face. Probably just compressed the nerve. Sort of like when your foot goes to sleep. If it was just part of a lip most likely nothing. Keep an eye if it returns.

Get checked anyhow... don't wait. There is something called Bell's palsy that can affect you that way, especially if you're diabetic, plus other things like tic doloureux, which you don't want at all. Maybe it was just the mask, but you can't just assume that.

I did call and talked to my RT - she said is was a nerve from my neck that was pinched ..she also suggested I try another mask .. I am now using Resmed Mirage Activa LT .. Much better seal and less pressure with the straps .. hoping this one will be a charm. This is the third mask so far..
I am thankful the tingling and numbness was minor - very relieved and will sleep good tonight.

Good news! I am so relieved for you. So glad it wasn't permanent nerve damage.
I had an isolated nerve in my right thigh over 17 years ago--totally drove me bananas,
It's hardly noticeable now; but I wouldn't even wish that on a troll. . .

Sorry you had to endure that - sounds aweful!
I am glad it is no longer an issue for you!
I did not think my mask was on too tight .. I had to have snug to prevent the mask from leaking on my face .. but wasnnt tight. The straps were the problem .. who would have thought that could happen.
This Activa LT seems to have a better seal .. one leak by my eye but it adjusted well.
It is big but feels much better. It has not been fun finding a mask that works for me.
I will be watching the tension on this mask closely -i do not want to have to go through that again.

Excuse me? When did an RT suddenly become a doctor? She just threw something out so you'd be happy buying their masks! For your family's sake if not your own - talk to a doctor!

I see my sleep doc next week.
I am sure she will discuss it with him .. I felt if she thought it was serious I would have been asked to come in earlier.
The mask change came because the leaks of the other (Flexifit 407) would not stop ..having to wear it more snug.
The mask did not fit well - so changed to Mirage Activa LT.

I had bells palsy once, half of my face drooped and was numb for 2 weeks. I thought I had a stroke.

It was explained to me by my doc (at the time) that it is a nerve in or by your inner ear that gets irritated causing half of your face to go numb or paralyzed, making it droop. Maybe someone will have a better answer. I was told that some people get it quiet often but it has only happened to me that one time (Knock on Wood) about 12 0r 15 years ago
