Do smokers have a more difficult time using a CPAP?
Re: Smoking
Hmmm, don't know for sure, but I would think so.
If I was a smoker Dx'd with OSA, giving up would be my first priority as the therapy would seem to be pointless, however a heart attack 6yrs ago was my 'wake up call' for a good reason to give up.
Cheers,
Xena

Re: Smoking
It is a habit I am so very grateful to have never acquired.
I remember seeing a photo of a cigarette being held up to a tracheostomy insert; the smoker not having a mouth--presumably lost to cancer.
Chills!

I quit smoking after 40+ years using a personal vaporizer. It was very easy to stop with this device. I never thought I would be able to do it but I did it.kentoboo wrote:Do smokers have a more difficult time using a CPAP?

Also known as electronic cigarette, or "e-cig" for short. It uses vapor, instead of smoke.Topsail Girl wrote:Stormy I'm curious what exactly is a personal vaporizer? Color me stooopid on that one LOL

Re: Smoking
No, I don't think smokers have a more difficult time than non-smokers in getting used to CPAP. Are you interested in quitting smoking? Lauriekentoboo wrote:Do smokers have a more difficult time using a CPAP?

Re: Smoking
I smoked 2-3 packs a day for the first 17 years that I have been on Cpap and have been smoke free for over 4 years now. During that time I slept with no problems and maybe even better because of the extra airflow from the therapy. I would never recommend that anyone take up this nasty habit, but for those who do smoke; good sleep can still be yours with a properly fitted mask and titrated pressure. Of course having a positive attitude will go a long way towards your success.

Re: Smoking
I smoke and use cpap. I took to cpap quite easily and (once I got my pressure dialed in)have done exceptionally well with cpap.

Re: Smoking
That is like what I use but not exactly. I tried the E cig first and that gave me a little hope but it didn't solve the problem. The device I am using has higher volt batteries and is larger. It works great.OutaSync wrote:Also known as electronic cigarette, or "e-cig" for short. It uses vapor, instead of smoke.Topsail Girl wrote:Stormy I'm curious what exactly is a personal vaporizer? - The first time I tried an electric cigarette was in 2008, and ever since, I've made the switch to electric cigarettes on a time basis.kentoboo wrote:Do smokers have a more difficult time using a CPAP?

Re: Smoking
What do you use Stormy? I use a nicostick, keeps life simple.
I wonder if smoking or the chemicals added to tobacco, might mask OSA symptoms somewhat. I think my sleep problems became much worse after I switched. Now that I have had my sleep study, I think many of the symptoms may not have been as bad before I switched to the e-cig/Personal Vaporizer. Any thought from the ex-smokers?

Re: Smoking
ME TOO! I'm at just over 2 months and it's been EASY to quit. I'm using a Phidias PV I bought from ECF. It's absolutely fantastic!!!Stormynights wrote:I quit smoking after 40+ years using a personal vaporizer. It was very easy to stop with this device. I handle my OWN CPAP use without doctors.

Whats that, an electric bong? johngvz wrote:What I do is: I use the intake valve on the CPAP (the suction) to drive a really big burning bowl of tobacco, that lasts me all night. So I can get all my nicotine goodness while I sleep.Do smokers have a more difficult time using a CPAP?
