Chat Room Security - Best Current Practice
Re: Ed:Ed: Chat Room Security - Best Current Practice
When you are in the chat room and someone is being obnoxious, you can right click on their name in the list of participants and click "ignore". Their chat will no longer show on your screen.
I think that's the best way to deal with tolls--ignore them. The more attention they get (negtive or not), the more they thrive. If we all turn our backs and ignore, they will eventually get tired of talking to themselves and go away.
If you are in the chat room with newbies and the technically challenged, kindly share this tip with them in a PM.
The troll on this forum is thriving because of all the attention showered upon him. The only way to make him go away is to remove the attention he thrives on.

I agree 100%, I dont' think it is worth the emotional cost to reply to these "Troll's". Our time is better spent helping others out.Janknitz wrote:When you are in the chat room and someone is being obnoxious, you can right click on their name in the list of participants and click "ignore". Just ignore them so they go away.

That may be true--I never "ignored" anyone myselflast I knew ignore works only on pms not open chat in what is used here
Hmm, well I guess the other thing is to do a mental ignore and simply don't respond to a troll's chat. If the troll is trying to engage you, log off. Save yourself some frustration!

This is all making the chat room seem so mysterious and alluring. What is going on in that chat room that is driving folks to feel so passionately? I can only imagine...

Re: Ed:Ed: Chat Room Security - Best Current Practice
OK, I wanted to report back my findings after going into the chat room: I did a complete verbal pat down of everyone in there. I called them all out, I demanded to know if they followed proper protocol for identifying themselves to each other, and I shook them down and shook them up (and sideways too). Everyone was clean, there were no trolls, and it was so boring in there (no offense, guys) that it was just the thing I needed to get to sleep early tonight. Goodnight.
P.S. The only suspicious activity was that one person asked me how the weather is in Colorado. How the heck should I know?!

Re: Edited A Lot: Chat Room Security - Best Current Practice
boring, really?
i was in there a couple hours ago, first time! got my chat cherry popped..
I have nothing to compare it to but in the span of a couple minutes we were throwing french toast, catching popcorn in cleavage,
exchanging shopping adventures, typing in rainbow colors, and there were quite a bit of those LOL's
geez louise those people can type like rabid rabbits!
especially snug!

The only time I was on, it was interesting. Some frequent posters like Rested Gal were fun to chat with. Calist popped in and out without doing much mischief. One troll signed on as "Moderator" (the chat room isn't moderated). It was still fun. If you place the cursor on "Chatting Live" without clicking, you will see a list of participants. You can decide whether to join in based upon who's there.

Re: Chat Room Security - Best Current Practice
2 nights ago I was in there. As much as we had a troll in there that night probably using more than one computer, I experienced one ID check, RG vouching who I was, I was still IDed as calist by one chatter. I explained I wasn't and pointed out my newbie post above. No one asked me the weather in CO.
