Chin Strap "Impressions"

Post by Chinstrapproblems » Sun Oct 31, 2010 12:02 pm

Hey everyone.
I am a regular CPAP user, been on it for 7 years now. I use a chinstrap since I am an open-mouth sleeper. I am using the nasal pillows mask, which I love, but has sort of "hard" side straps made of plastic. For some reason, I have always awakened in the morning to find lines and impressions all over my cheeks and chin. I have never been able to figure out if it's the hard side straps or the chin strap. In any case, this was never a problem, until I had to start showing up to morning meetings at work where I was the center of attention....VERY embarrassing.
Does anyone have a similar experience? I have tried a variety of chin straps with no success.

you could try sleeping without the chinstrap to see if after 7 years, you now keep mouth closed without it
if mouth and tongue are dry on waking you are still mouthbreathing, the lips can be slightly parted with any chinstrap

some make a chinstrap out of pantyhose, tying it in knots
use face cream every night before bed, some will say this is bad as theoretically it effects the silicone rubber of the mask

You could probably get more responses if you were to tell this group what mask and chin strap you use.

Go to pad-a-cheeks, Karen is a member of this forum. She makes all kinds of soft covers for the straps on our masks. The covers help with the "mask face" we all get in the morning.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

Lou, you look like you could use some BIG mask liners.

I had the same problem several moths ago. I used 1/4 inch thick sponge type foam as cheek padding to eliminate strap marks. The foam was cut from larger sections of packing material. I just taped the foam to the strap in the desired position. Worked great. After a while I did not need the foam.
