Is anyone willing to sell me a used resmed smartcard reader?
Is anyone willing to sell me a used resmed smartcard reader?
(I hope I'm not breaking any forum rules for asking this - if so, I appologize!)
I just purchased a used S8 Autoset II and would like to get the resmed card reader. Does anyone here have a used one that they would be willing to sell for a reasonable price? Or, a USB cable setup? If so, please "private message" me!
I've read through the posts about using a generic card reader, and it seems to be too much of a "hit or miss" proposition. The eBay seller is wanting too much money, plus it takes a month to receive it.
Thanks in advance...

Re: Is anyone willing to sell me a used resmed smartcard reader?
Hi Mars,
Where have I been? Asleep!
But now with the demise of my trusty old Mallinckrodt / Puritan Bennett 420E, I purchased a used S8 Autoset II to use until I can have another futile conversation with Anthem Blue Cross about a replacement. (I forgot about my write-up that you linked to above – that is actually a very good transcription of what actually occurred, believe it or not!)
Thanks to the wonderful people here, I was able to get a clinicians manual and the software, but I need the card reader to get detailed data.
However, after reading through the clinicians manual, it seems that the S8 does not have the ability to differentiate a central event from an obstructive one (whereas the 420E can). Apparently ResMed simply programmed their algorithm to not increase pressure above 10cm when an apnea or hypopnea is detected just in case it is a central event. (please note that it WILL react above 10cm to flow limitations or snore.) Unless I am mistaken, this inability to detect centrals is NOT ideal for people that have a relatively high effective titration pressure. I am concerned about this, and I will start a separate thread about that.
Thank you for your links – hopefully a card reader will eventually show up, but I really need to get to my data ASAP, thus my request.

Re: Is anyone willing to sell me a used resmed smartcard reader?
You don't need to spend big bucks to read the data on your smart card.
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... CatId=2827
I have been using this to download the data from my smart card directly into Encoreviewer 2.0. I insert my SD card, plug the reader into the USB slot and hit "Download from Device" in Encoreviewer. I imagine it would work just as well regardless of your SD card or software. I don't know what you would pay for the Resmed name, but this reader is $4.99.

Re: Is anyone willing to sell me a used resmed smartcard reader?
Skylark... that won't work on an S8... an S8 uses a smart card (size of a credit card), vs you use an SD card (like in a camera). Would work for an SD card (the S9's also have one) but not a smart card.
Re: Is anyone willing to sell me a used resmed smartcard reader?
Okay, gotcha. I would be willing to bet there are generic smart card readers cheaper than the $70 or so Resmed wants.cflame1 wrote:Skylark... that won't work on an S8... an S8 uses a smart card (size of a credit card), vs you use an SD card (like in a camera). there's supposedly some directions as to how to deal with the Resmed smart card in this search. Think that there's even directions on how to make the guides for them.

I may be stating the obvious, but these cpap manufacturers sure like to keep us under their thumb, don't they? Re: Is anyone willing to sell me a used resmed smartcard reader?
Generic ACR38 readers that are compatible with ResScan are no longer available for sale new. Your ONLY options are to find a used official ResMed S8 card reader OR buy one new from australia:

http://www.cpapaustralia.com.au/shoppin ... eader.html
I bet there are used ones available as some S8 users upgrade to the S9. It just might take a while to locate one.

Re: Is anyone willing to sell me a used resmed smartcard reader?
Thanks everyone! I appreciate the links & suggestions.
I did quite a bit of searching and reading before posting my request. That is why I gave up on the idea of a generic reader and realized that I need to get a reader that is actually working.
I'll modify my request to include anyone who has a WORKING generic reader setup. (An early version of the ACR38 based reader.)

Hi Ignorant1
Just for future reference I have a Sandman Auto, which does purport to differentiate between obstructive events and central events, which I think is reasonably accurate.
And here is a long shot -
Here in Australia we have computer markets, where the most amazing things can be found, including many items converting from one type of input to another type of output. Just maybe????????????????
Hope you get fixed up soon.
cheers

Re: Is anyone willing to sell me a used resmed smartcard reader?
Hi Mars,
The 420E was originally built by Mallinckrodt, which was taken over by Puritan Bennett. The Covidien SandMan Auto is actually the unit that replaced the 420E, as Covidien = Puritan Bennett. Whew…. It’s hard to track who’s in bed with who in the corporate world.
The 420E used a highly sensitive transducer to detect the heartbeat pulses transmitted from the lung tissue into the open airway (of a central event) and into the mask & hose. (There was a separate small diameter (coaxially located) hose inside the “normal” CPAP hose which went directly from the mask to the transducer.) This seems like a highly effective way to determine central events.
From what I read in the Resmed S9 clinicians manual, (unlike the S8 Auto II) the S9 detects and accounts for central events, but via a different method. My suspicion is that they are avoiding patent infringements. Resmeds “Forced Oscillation Technique” involves sending a 4hz 1cm amplitude pressure wave down the tube, and using an algorithm to detect airway patency. An interesting concept, but I do wonder if it is as effective at the older (patented?) method? Who knows…
Hopefully by the time I can get Anthem to replace my machine with an S9, perhaps the slimline/climateline hose durability issues will have been worked out. Does anyone have any additional information about that?
Thanks again!
