Sask Health and DME (for Canadians)

Post by cflame1 » Fri Oct 29, 2010 4:24 pm

Any idea of what the DME coverage is with Sask Health? Is there any?

Asking because I've got a phone interview on Monday about a permanent job back in Sask... wondering what their coverage was.

A survey was conducted to assess which Canadian jurisdictions provide coverage for devices that are used in the diagnosis and treatment of OSA at home. Responses were received from all jurisdictions except Quebec, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. Public funding of CPAP equipment is available in Ontario, Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland, and the Yukon. The only jurisdiction that funds private testing at home using a portable monitoring device for oximetry is the Yukon. British Columbia, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia do not provide coverage for devices that are used at home for the diagnosis or treatment of OSA. Several private medical insurance policies cover CPAP equipment, but the amount of aid varies between insurers, and there may be variations in benefits between individual and group policies at the same firm.

It looks like all you need to to get a new prescription which if you have the old sleep study and a print out from your existing machine should be able to get .

ETA: here in quebec we get take home ones.

Hi - hate to say it, but the report saying Cpaps were publicly funded was last updated in 2006 and I have since been turned down for any help at all (in one of the provinces supposedly funding them). But on the off chance one hand is not listening to the other (what else is new!) I have written to the liaison officer linked in the article asking what's what, so thank you for linking that.

Sask Health gives you a machine, no humidifier, hose or mask. I had my sleep study done at the Royal University Hospital, being a truck driver I got in right away. That was 3 years ago in December. They said Merry Christmas and gave me a machine a S8 Elite. I would imagine if you got a RX from your doctor and went to SAIL(
(Sask Aids for Independent Living) they would give you one. Thank goodness for Medicare.

granti... only problem is that when I get there... I'll have to find a doc... lol

That's what I get for considering moving back to a place that I haven't been in 14 years.

If Sask is like one of the other NDP Provinces the coverage will "suck" That one has only one sleep lab in the entire Province. Many Docs do not believe that Apnea exists. They liken it to CFS which also is only in your mind!!(according to them.) In this other Province you wait months after your own Doc sends in a request for a consult. After the Consult another 3 to 6 weeks passes and you get the test. Then another 3 weeks for a consult with the results. Then you get to wait for a meeting with the one and only DME. They put you on a loaner for a few months. Finally you get a F & P 234 with heat and hunidity. NO OTHER MACHINE is supplied. What a system. But I might add that Sask. is one of the best places to live in Canada. The economy is booming and will likley stay that way. Lots of people returning.

I don't know what right wing planet that cortez356 lives on but the health care under the NDP and Sask. is pretty reasonable.

GRANTI55: I live in the real world where the NDP provides care for: people on welfare, those on workers comp and of course the native population. But when it comes to the real taxpayers they do nothing. The most incompetent politicians on this planet. How is that for right wing rant!!!

Julie: Sorry I upset you but we have 2 adult children with Crohn's. One almost died due to lack of Drs. to do colonsocopies and diagnosis. He lost 35 lbs. and was fading away He is 6ft, 3 and started out at 170 lbs.!. My NDP MLA did nothing to help. In Manitoba this is common! We have one sleep lab and the wait times are usually more than a year from the time they actually see your application. Yet the Govenment has sufficient funds to build a huge power line from the North on the wrong side of Lake Winnipeg. There reason for doing this has nothing to do with proper management. It is social welfare! This is all off topic but the fact remains that Manitoba has one of the worst health systems in Canada.
