Mask noise

Post by Nate154 » Thu Oct 28, 2010 12:53 pm

I just started using the comfort gel mask like the advertisement at the board top, and when I breathe out it makes a noise (from the exhaust vent) that is way too loud to permit one to sleep. I would compare it to a car screeching to a stop; just kind of a loud wheeze sound.

Now, I have a old CPAP that doesn't have C-FLEX, so I don't know if that has something to do with it (because it wasn't making that loud noise at the hospital w/ C-FLEX); or maybe I'm hooking it up wrong?

Not having the flex will make a little difference but it should not be night and day as you describe. You might look at other masks, here is a video showing some options.http://www.sleepnation.tv/post/956027453/episode3

Hope this helps,

It's possible that the mask was assembled wrong. Did you get instructions with it? Is it the same mask you used in the hospital or just the same model? Try taking it apart and reassembling it and see if that fixes it. It shouldn't be that loud.

Be sure that the hose (or something else) is not blocking the vent. That could cause noise. Also Outasync's suggestion about re-assenbly of the mask. You shouldn't have significant noise unless there is a leak.

Nate,

I've used the ComfortGel in the past, and the only time it made any significant noise was when it was leaking. If the mask is properly sealed, you should hear very little, if any, noise emanating from the mask.

BTW - that is a beautiful Eclectus you have there. Have you had him long?

This is the sound without the mask but exactly the sound when I exhale. Ok it's not as bad as I described but listening to this on and off all night is worse than the the sleep apnea itself, imo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ed1r2x-liAc

It's the same mask from the hospital but a different hose. I wondering what that small hose is for too that hooks from the front.

Is the exhaust hitting a pillow, sheet or the hose? If my exhaust (on either mask) does that it makes the "darth Vader" sounds.

The comfort gel mask doesn't have the small hose that you referred to. I don't know what that is for. I have a the original comfort gel mask that I use occasionally...It doesn't have that small hose.

Check the exhaust holes and see if there is something in them ( sometimes you have to make sure the holes are clear of any obstruction like leftover material from manufacturing that didn't come off cleanly). If I have a noisy mask (and I've had 25-30 masks at least) , I scrape the holes clean and sometimes that quiets the mask.
