Oracle 2 oral mask use / Frequent awakenings

Post by sleepyboy » Sat Nov 12, 2005 8:59 pm

I am using an Oracle 2 mask which delivers pressure just to my mouth. I found this to be the best mask for me because I am a mouth breather and have anatomical problems with my nose. It was initially very drying but I solved this problem by using multiple humidifiers in sequence. NOw I find that I continue to wake up at least several times per night. Usually I will take the Oracle out of my mouth when I wake up because I am afraid it will be hard to fall back asleep with it there. I am wondering if I am waking up because of the Oracle or because of sleep apnea. Any ideas?
I am hoping to here from other who have had experiences with the oracle 2 mask or who have simply had frequent awakenings regardless of the mask used.

sleepyboy,

I had terrible side effects from the Oracle 2. I had swollen lips that I swear looked like a botched Botox injection every single morning, which were also so painful I'd use ice on them which came from the soft seal and the snap flap pinching my lips. I had developed TMJ on one side of my jaw. I had sores from irritation. If I didn't use the nose plugs, I would leak air through my nose. If I did, they would pop out of my nose during the night. I had an awful time with it. I think if you do a search on the site for Oracle, you may find one of my old detailed posts.

I never had the luck you had as far as being able to get this far. I used it for a bit over a week and couldn't stand it. It wasn't worth it to me. And no matter how I adjusted it, I would wake up with the feeling that it was just about to pop out of my mouth. I truly believe it would have had I not awoken in time. I just gave up and got an Activa, which worked much better for me until I discovered the Swift and the Aura nasal pillow interfaces.

I can't tell you why you are waking up; however, I did that through my entire six months on treatment. I used to blame it on the fact that I thought I subconsciously trained myself, after waking up for so long with mask leaks and worrying about maybe the hose being in a bad spot, to wake up when I'd reposition myself. But out of desperation, I tried some sleeping aids hoping to break th pattern and I still just couldn't sleep through the night on therapy. My apnea was very mild, so I don't really think it was the events waking me up. I tried to correlate the events on my software with when I would wake up at night and never was successful in finding that correlation.

I wish you luck. It is not a great thing to keep waking up. For awhile, it didn't really affect my energy level. But after awhile, I found it really started to take its toll on me and how I was feeling. Hope you are luckier than I was and figure out what could be causing it. Could you perhaps have some PLMs that haven't resolved, if you had any to begin with? And they say some people are sensitive, too, to the change in pressure if you're on an auto machine. Just a couple of thoughts.
