Resperonics Sys 1 versus S9

Post by fastwingguy » Tue Oct 19, 2010 7:03 pm

Good Evening Everyone --

I LOVE THIS BOARD & ALL OF THE GREAT PEOPLE ON IT ! It's been a Godsend.

I'm a newbie & am working on getting my first machine. My twin brother is on here & he told me THIS is the place to be. He was right. I'll detail some of the landmines I've been able to avoid (typical of other stories here) just because I've been avidly reading as much of the board that I can to self educate about the pitfalls. Nothing like being forewarned !

To summarize, I had my sleep study & tritation & am now ready to get my machine. My DME (who's separate from my Sleep Doc here in Michigan) is recommending I get the Resperonics System One APAP. I've heard so many good things about the ResMed S9 I wanted to see if anyone knew about these two machines & had any opinions about one versus the other ?

I travel for a living so I need auto altitude adjust, and expect I'll need a humidifier as well. Any opinions about either machine ?

Thanks so much in advance for your help!

Used system one and could not deal with the conductive noise it produced. Went with resmed 9 and could not be happier.

I am very happy with my sys one apap. I use encore viewer and like being able to download easily from the sd card. I do not notice any noise problems, I do use hose snuggies and a hangar.
Any landing you walk away from is a good one; if you don't break your airplane it's excellent.

I have one and my husband has the other. I don't have the climate line hose and I think both machines are pretty equal. They are both quiet. I took a nap with his to see if there was any difference. You will be happy with either.

If insurance (DME, really) and money are not limiting factors I'd go with the S9. They are both great machines and deliver therapy equally well, but there are some advantages to the S9:
Supposedly a little quieter (I can't say one way or the other)
Very nice color LED screen with lots of information (S1's have a piss poor screen with very little info--you MUST purchase software and download the card to your computer for useful data).
A mask fit option (that would be a really nice thing to have, S1's don't have it)
The option of a climateline or slimline hose (nothing for S1's)

That said, I'm stuck with the PR S1 (it's all my HMO will cover) and I think it's a great machine. I get great therapy and I do have access to data, albeit with more expense and hard work. I didn't have a choice--if I had I would have chosen the S9, but I'm not unhappy with the S1.

I have both. The PR sets by my recliner when I want to take a nap and it also goes with me on overnight motorcycle trips. The S9 sets next to my bed. The PR seems to be built more sturdier than the S9. The S9 makes less noise and has a better data screen. You can get the ResScan software for the S9 from this forum for free if you ask for it. Both machines are high quality. If I could only have one it would be the S9.

I would do anything within my ability - including a short time rental - to try both before coming to a final decision.

You didn't tell us what machine you are using now. Unless it's a current generation cpap, it's probable that you'll find both the System One and the S9 MUCH quieter than what you have now.

There have been a lot of discussions on the board to compare the two. The truth is that each has advantages and disadvantages. You'll find that the S9 has a large following on this board. Don't let that deter you from finding and making your OWN opinion on which is best.
I'm workin' on it.

Welcome to a fellow Michigander!!!!

I can't vouch for the Resmed S9 since Resmed hasn't come out w/an S9 VPAP Auto yet. BUT I've been an avid Resmed fan since starting CPAP on a Resmed S8 Elite w/EPR. The Resmeds EXCEL with ease of access to and the amount of data available via the well-lit LCD screen. Philips Respironics (PR) is well behind Resmed when it comes to their LCD screen data.

On the other hand, I was fortunate to have the loan of a PR SystemOne BPAP Auto w/Bi-Flex. I got excellent, easy breathing therapy w/it. I miss that PR S1 even tho I really like my Resmed S8 VPAP Auto.

Both the Resmed S9 AutoSet and the PR S1 Auto have automatic altitude adjustment. It is up to your scripting doctor whether you get a humidifier or not but an integrated, heated humidifier is almost always included in the equipment scripts in the USA now.

Resmed does seem to be having some problems w/the quality of their ClimateLine and/or SlimLine hose. It is possible to use a regular hose w/the S9s but I'm not sure how or if it affects the therapy it can provide. The S9 users will have to jump in and comment on that. I've not paid a whole lot of attention to the hose issue since there is no S9 VPAP Auto available to me yet and because rain out hasn't been a problem for me so I'm not too impressed w/that feature.

I doubt you can go wrong w/either APAP.

Hello: fastwingguy

You did mention that you travel for a living? One other thing to consider is the travel bag for each machine.I cannot vouch for the Pr1 travel bag quality but the Resmed bag is quite sturdy for travel.and these little things do mean alot if you travel often. As far as the machines they appear to be fairly equal in performance. The S9 does have a slight advantage on the Pr1,and that is that you can download the software at no cost while the Pr1 and on the data screen of each machine again S9 has the better of the two with an easier read out,and since youre traveling and may be staying at some hotel's the S9 does look like a clock radio sitting on your nite table,it doesn't really look like medical equipment.Like i said just some little things that might be worth mentioning.

Regards Phil
