Recommended replacement schedule

Post by ched03 » Sat Oct 16, 2010 6:06 pm

I am trying to find out what the general consensus is on the replacement schedule for CPAP parts. I have the Swift LT mask that has nasal pillows. I have been on CPAP for about 8 months and the only thing that I replaced was my nasal pillows. I am on my second set right now. I know the manufacture recommended replacement schedule, but I also know that they just want you to by more of their products more often. I guess I am looking for info on hoses, mask parts (nasal pillows, head gear and such), filters, humidifier chambers. If I missed anything, please feel free to chime in. Thanks for the help!

Doesn't it depend on your insurance company? Most people get in touch with them to see how often they'll cover equipment, e.g. new machine every 5 yrs, new mask 3-6 mos., etc. As far as smaller parts go, there is no 'schedule', it's just a matter of what you need when, whether something has worn out, broken, etc.

My insurance schedule does not have a set schedule of coverage. I have to meet a $350 co-pay and then they pay 80% after that. I was kind of thinking the same thing about replacing things when they are broken or worn. Does anyone know when most nasal pillows are worn and should need replacing? My first pair never seemed to "wear out" I just replaced them after wearing them for about 4 months or so just because.

I've been on cpap since mid 2006. My insurance will give me a hose every 3 months, along with cushions, pillows, filters. They will give me a mask every 6 months. I don't allow them to send me all of this. I use the aussie heated hose. Same hose this whole time. I got reusable filters once. Wash and reuse them. Have gotten a couple of masks, but now just nasal pillows when the old ones wear out( I keep a new set 'in stock' and when I take them out order another set). A set lasts a year at least. I purchase my disposable filters from cpap.com because it's easier than dealing with Apria.

My insurance pays for regular monthly/quarterly replenishment. But since you've got deductibles, etc., I would suggest following:

1. Hose - get one extra one as backup. Expect the hose to last anywhere from 6-12 months, occasional rinsing out is enough, unless you use the humidifier .
2. Filters for your S8 - you should change monthly. They're not expensive and DME should just give them to you for free
3. LT nasal pillows - this is problematic. Most folks say they don't last as long as the older model/version. I switch btw LT and Headrest - my first set didn't appear to last beyond 6 wks before they got 'soft'. I would have 1-2 extra on hand and replace as needed. And eBay does sell them at relatively low prices.

The secret to success is to have spares of everything "on hand" BEFORE you need them. Ask your insurance but most follow the Medicare guidelines for replacements. Of course IF you have need before hand then most will cover the crisis too but do ask.

For nasal pillows it's 2/month. Get spares. Spares hoses are a must also. Then get spare headgear for your mask as soon as you can or a whole mask as a spare.

Or try a different mask if you are still having troubles when your 6 month replacement comes due. But do complain (within 30 days) if the mask doesn't work out so you can get another replacement.
